Between host Ricky Gervais’ many off-color jokes and Leonardo DiCaprio’s supposedly awkward moment with Lady Gaga, the 2016 Golden Globe Awards telecast was yet another reminder of just how awful(ly wonderful) the annual awards program can be. However, whether or not master of ceremonies Jimmy Fallon is up to the challenge for the 2017 broadcast remains to be seen — though judging by the nominees announced early Monday morning, he’ll have plenty of opportunities to deliver a few zingers. Who knows? Maybe nominee Jonah Hill will dress up as the bear from The Revenant again.

Some of film film’s greatest critical hits are well-represented, like Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester by the Sea and Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight. Not to be outdone, the standouts of television’s 2016 boom — including Westworld, Atlanta and The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story — have also secured several nominations. And then there’s Deadpool, the R-rated comic book farce, which managed to nab a best picture nomination for itself and a best actor entry for its wise-cracking star, Ryan Reynolds. Per his latest tweet, the Canadian entertainer seems pretty happy about it. We’ll find out who wins Sunday, January 8, 2017 starting at 8pm ET on NBC.
