Over the weekend, Nike and LeBron James unveiled his newest signature sneaker in his hometown of Akron, Ohio. The LeBron 13 is performance sneaker with a tripartite focus — sock-like fit, impact protection and explosive cushioning. All attributes are basic tenets in the game of basketball, but LeBron hasn’t ever suffered a serious injury in his career, and the LeBron 13 will help that streak — knock on wood, Cavs fans — continue.

The LeBron 13 features Flywire technology for a breathable upper that snugly contours to your foot. Sock-like is the expression, almost like you’re slipping into some cozy socks before patrolling the cold floor in the kitchen during the winter.

Nike Hyperposite materials also feature zone-specific impact protection that’s so strong, it can withstand the torque a 6’8 260-pound man produces when going at full speed on the NBA hardwood. All the dangers inherent in that statement are protected by the scientific segmentation, with asymmetrical lacing system buttressing the lockdown.

The Nike Zoom Air hexagonal units that debuted in the 12 also provide cushioning on the sole of the 13, mapped out according to key pressure points during the testing phase. The 13 “evolves the size and placement” of the hexagonal Nike Zoom Air units. A pair of the hexagonal units are now 13 millimeters thick, a larger volume than those in the LeBron 12, including one in the heel and one in the toe of the foot.

As a personal nod to James’ heritage, outsole details on the LeBron 13 include the phrase “Akronite” along with personal tributes to his December 1984 birth.
