Using measures that affect mostly the richest one percent of Americans, Wall Street has declared that the US economy grew at its fastest pace in the last three months since a year ago. But while investors make a bee-line for Twitter shares, many Americans are wondering where their next meal will come from.

Nearly 50 million Americans saw cuts to their food stamps last Friday after the automatic end of a phase of stimulus spending. Californian families on food stamps will now receive about $36 a month less than they used to.

But that’s not all – Congress wants to force even more cuts to the federal food assistance program. The Republican dominated House has already passed a bill that would push 2 million Americans off the program. The Senate has also approved cuts but on a smaller scale.
