7 DAY WEST- POWDER FORECAST – POWDER ALERT NEW ENGLAND
SUMMARY:
Snow is still falling over Aspen, Telluride, and most of the San Juans of Colorado. We forecasted generally 5-10 inches for most resorts on the Western side of the State that held up (Crested Butte, Aspen) and feel that Telluride should catch up by late tonight. Small waves of energy will continue over these areas especially near Telluride today. Another wave of moisture hits the San Juans Monday/Tuesday with some models hinting at another 5-10 inches in the southern areas. Aspen is a clear winner if you chased from the Front Range today with 9-14 inches in the past 2 days (4-6 overnight). Mammoth in the southern Sierra and Kirkwood further north nabbed 2-3 feet and will most likely grab another 30-50 inches in the next 7 days! WOO HOO. Mammoth might hit 500 inches YTD in the next 10 days and it’s only mid February! I hit Snowbird yesterday with 16 inches of freshies (Perfect dense cushion with 3-5 of light frosting) that completely refreshed all elevations. Crowds were off the hook at most resorts in Utah yesterday (3-4 tram wait at the Bird) with reports of lift issues at the Bird as well as Deer Valley. Park City squeezed 16 inches out of the last storm with reports of epic conditions at upper elevations.
FORECAST
Snow showers continue in western Colorado today. Chase to Aspen, Snowmass, Highlands today followed by Telluride this afternoon. Telluride, Durango and Silverton may stay in the chase hunt for Monday or even Tuesday as another wave of weak to moderate disturbances move in under SW and North flow. It’s really hard to nail down amounts but some models are hinting at another 5-11 inches by Tuesday morning (We will issue an update to this forecast later today or early Monday). New Mexico will see heavy snow (10-17 inches) on the eastern slope just east of Santa Fe with moderate amounts for Taos (3-7) late Sunday-Tuesday. I would consider a chase to Santa Fe or areas to the east.
If your desperate for powder fly to Boston today (Early) and nab 12-20 inches of powder in New England which will favor southern and central resorts of NH, VT, an Maine. We think resorts closer to the coast like Sunday River might be winners? It will be hard to go wrong at any New England resort Monday. Caveats? Winds will be strong closer to the coastal resorts so lifts may be delayed! Blizzard conditions will exist on roadways Monday with lowering temps allowing light density snow to blow sideways and drift over roadways.
EXTENDED FORECAST:
The Cascades and Sierra will be active by mid week. Warm temperatures and Southerly flow in the Cascades will bring decent moisture by Wednesday (7,000 foot snow levels with rain at many elevations). Colder air will drop snow levels each day in the extended period with light to moderate snowfall each day (Could end up with decent powder days by Thursday or Friday). The Sierra earns a foot of powder by Thursday as the first wave of energy moves in. Snow levels will be fairly high (7,000 or above).
Several additional waves of significant snow are likely in the Sierra by next weekend. 30-50 inches of snowfall are likely by early the following week. Snow levels may drop to 6,000 feet at times making for some chase worthy ventures. More will be issued in a future forecast!
Moisture from the Sierra and Cascades Thursday takes a northerly route over the Rockies by late this week (Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado) that has decent cold air and westerly flow by Thursday/Friday. Many mountain locations will see snowfall (Amounts may be moderate).
The 2nd series of Sierra storms next weekend and into the following week may take a southerly route over the 4 corners. Significant snow is likely during this period but models will definitely change until we are a bit closer in the forecast period. That’s just my speculation at this point. Many areas may earn decent dumps especially the following week after this 7 day forecast. Southern resorts of the Sierra might be favored over the north?
