The soap opera- like comedy, mystery and drama series, aka Desperate Housewives will always be remembered by viewers. The show has certainly entered motion picture history with the number of awards, positive reviews and several million views. Desperate Housewives is an American TV show produced by Cherry Production and ABC Studios. The creator of the show, at the same time and executive producer, Marc Cherry, was in the role of a show-runner as well. Since the fourth season other executive producers’ names were written on the board like George W. Perkins, Larry Shaw, Bob Daily, John Pardee, David Grossman and Joey Murphy. the first episode of the Desperate Housewives show was aired on October 3, 2004, and since then every Sunday at 9 p.m. ( 9 p.m. eastern time or 8 p.m. central time) a new episode was released on ABC.

The story revolved around four female characters, residents at the Wisteria lane, friends, family and neighbors. If you have seen the show then you must have heard that the typical opening and ending of each episode is by a narrator, who is none the less but their dead neighbor- Mary Alice Young. Wisteria lane, the show’s setting, is a fictional street in a non-existent place called Fairview in the invented Eagle State. The narrator of the show unravels the Wisteria Lane secrets, mysteries, misfortunes, fortunes and funny situations. Physically Mary Alice Young is present only in the first episode when she allegedly commits suicide. In latter episode and seasons we can see Mary Alice only through flash backs, memories and dreams. The story that she tells covers the eight season of the show which include around thirteen years of the main character’s lives. The beginning of the story was set from 2004 and 2008, and the later part of the story was a few years on, from 2013 to 2017. The storyline also moves to and fro in time through flashbacks set as early as in 1980 and as futuristic as in 2020.

Desperate Housewives Cast

The cast of the Desperate Housewives show consisted of the four leading female actresses: Teri Hatcher in the role of Susan Mayer, Marcia Cross as Bree Van de Kamp, Gabrielle Solis was played by Eva Longoria and Lynette Scavo by Felicity Huffman. The narrator’s voice was the voice of Brenda Strong.

Desperate Housewives after it was first aired quickly became the favorite TV show in the homes of many. In the first two years of its existence until TV seasons 2008/09 Desperate Housewives’ first seasons were voted in the top ten TV shows. The reviews and the critics of the show proved that the Desperate Housewives show was one of the most watched and most popular shows worldwide. The statistics have shown that the number of audience that was watching Desperate Housewives was more or less 120 millions. After the conveyed survey the results came in that the show was among the top 3 TV shows in more than twenty countries and it remained, in 2012, as the internationally most watched comedy-drama-action show. All the data for these facts was collected from Eurodata TV Worldwide where reviews are compared among five continents. So it is kind of a big deal to have the success that this show has. Moreover the earnings of the Desperate Housewives were quite astonishing, making the series the third highest profiting series in the year of 2010. The show made 2.74$ million per 30minutes of airing. Additionally, the show made number 56 on the New TV Classics list by the Entertainment Weekly.

The filming of the last season of the show, the eighth season, started on May 17, 2011 when the show was renewed by the ABC studios. The first episode of the last season aired on September 25, 2011- Sunday. By the may 13, 2012 the last season of the show was broadcast and that is when the show officially terminated. The specific thing about this show is that it last 60 minutes, just like Charmed, and not that surprisingly Desperate Housewives surpassed Charmed’s views by the end of the season 8. It is also notable that the finale of Desperate Housewives was the most watched TV series finale for 2012.

Desperate Housewives Production

The producer initially got the idea for the show when his mother and he caught a glimpse of Andrea Yates news report. The producer of Desperate Housewives had some experience in the field of producing so he could easily picture in his mind how he wanted the show to look. If you remember the hilarious Golden Girls, and the sequel- The Golden Place then you know what kind of a producer he is. He also produced other popular TV shows like: The 5 Mrs. Buchanans, the Crew, Some of my best Friends and so on. These shows, except for the Golden Girls and the Golden Place, didn’t get the success that Marc Cherry hoped for and lasted only about a year. Maybe the failure with the last shows made it difficult for him to get the attention of the TV networks such as Fox, HBO, CBS, Lifetime and Showtime. None of them showed any interest in what he had to offer. Well, none but the two brand new executives who didn’t know what they were doing. I am talking about the ABC executives Lloyd Braun and Susan Lynette. They were inspired by the success of the O.C. which in style was much like a soap opera, a trait typical for Desperate Housewives too. However, Disney was not pleased with the decision of the new ABC executives and let them go, a history repeating itself after the same thing happened with the series Lost.

Initially there was a hustle about the title of the show and the executives were more in favor of “THE SECRET LIVES OF HOUSEWIVES” OR “WISTERIA LANE” instead of Desperate Housewives. The outcome was that the title Desperate Housewives was kept and under this title the ABC first announced the show on October 23, 2003 saying that it was a soap opera blend of American Beauty, Twin Peaks and Knots Landing, created by Marc Cherry and Charles Pratt Junior, who also was the creator of Melrose Place. Charles Pratt only worked on the pilot episode of the show and later, in the first two seasons he was working as a consultant producer, rather than a producer; however Cherry continued his work until the last episode of the show. The success that the show was about to achieve was visible after only three broadcast episodes of the series. Thus, in October 20, 2004 Desperate Housewives and Lost were allowed to shoot a whole season, and as we know, many other seasons after that. Since 2007, ABC studios joined the production team consisting of Marc Cherry 9 the creator and owner of Cherry Productions) and Austin Bagley. Touchstone television was also an associate between 2004 and 2007.

A Word Or Two About The Desperate Housewives Production Crew

Executive producers changed from season to season. The only producer being always there was, of course, the creator himself- Marc Cherry. Other than him co- executive producers in season 1 and season two were Tom Spezialy and Michael Edelstein. Tom even left his previous job to be a part of the new hit series- Desperate Housewives. He was also a staff writer for the show and some of the previous shows he worked on were Jack and Jill, Parker Lewis can’t lose and Ed. On the other hand, the second co-executive producer Michael Eldestein was the executive producer of the trilogy Matrix as well as the series Hope and Faith. After infamous fallout the two co-producers left the show just to make some room for the fabulous writer, producer and award winner- Joe Keenan and TV movie producer George W. Perkins. The former was especially known for Fraiser’s fame and the latter for various movie productions as well as being a member of the Desperate Housewives series since the very beginning. Keenan, however, was a part of the show for only one season and was replaced by Bob Daily, writer and co-executive producer. Bob was a member of the crew during the third season of the show and is previously known for the animated show Rugarts and Fraiser. The fourth season brought on board John Padree and Joey Murphy who worked along Perkins, Daily and Cherry. The last two members were acquaintances to the creator of the show and had worked together in two other occasions- the comedy series Cybil and The Crew.

Filming The Series For Desperate Housewives

Cameras used to film the show were Panavision cameras of 35 mm. the last season, the eighth one, differs from this statement because it was shot on Arri Alexa digital camera. The widescreen that the show was broadcast on was the regular 16:9 HD, but framed for 4:3 aspect ratios. The setting was actually on Colonial Street, an artificial street built in the Universal Studios in Hollywood. Some of the hoses were only facades, but some were real. This scene exists since the 40’s and many scenes from movies and shows were filmed here as well, with some adjustments to the setting naturally. If you have a good eye for details you could spot some similarities of wisteria Lane to some streets in the hit motion pictures like Deep Impact, Bedtime for Bonzo, So Goes My Love, The Burbs, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Gremlins, Providence, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the Monsters. The biggest changes of the Colonial street took place while filming the second season when some of the facades or even buildings had to be displaced so that there was enough space for a park and the house for Edie. As for the interior part of the stages, some of them were built at the Universal Studios Hollywood and some of them in the lot of Wisteria Lane. Sometimes, if conditions required it, the interior decorum was duplicated to make the shooting run smoothly.

If you have seen the show, or at least some episode of it you were certainly impressed by the opening of the series. The opening sequence was the creator’s idea, but Cherry had some trouble executing it. Even though he sought for help in over a dozen of specialist companies, the solution was no way near. Then, finally he managed to get a hold of yU+co, a company from Hollywood, which managed to complete the entry video. The story behind the entry video is combining the mysteries and playfulness that weave throughout the series, the traditional role of women as well as their fight to overcome that tradition. In short, the opening sequence maybe portrays one of the oldest stories about female- male interaction and connection.

Danny Elfman created the music for the opening and for the good job that he did, he received a Primetime Emmy award and BMI TV Music Award. The theme song was even placed in the album of songs inspired for the Desperate Housewives. If you could notice sometimes only the apple scene is kept from the theme song. This is no accidence whatsoever. Sometimes when some episode is longer by a minute or two the theme song must be shortened so that the episode can fit the predicted time-frame. The other music for the film was written by composer Steve Jablonsky. He started his work in the series since episode 2, season 1 and manages to capture the general tone of the scenes written for the Desperate Housewives. Although the electronic sound pervades there is still a bit of live tunes. Themes for particular events repeat as well as for certain characters in the show.

Universal Records even distributed the soundtrack album of the first season of Desperate Housewives which was produced by Hollywood Records. All the songs in the album were either inspired by the show of were used in the first season. Later on, when they were filming the following seasons some of the songs were incorporated in scenes there too.

After the break of a few years the show continued filming in 2009. And that was when the creator of Desperate Housewives told everyone that the filming will continue for couple of more seasons and that there are many more stories to tell. The original contract for filming and making Desperate Housewives was seven years and Marc Cherry said that he would go on filming for a few more but only as an executive producer from the background. He also stated that the 5-year pause of the Desperate Housewives from the screens was a great tactics to hold everyone’s attention for the airing of the new season. The break gave the whole team some time to revitalize and to start anew. In the autumn of 2009 the creator of Desperate Housewives signed a deal for keeping the series on air as late as 2013. This also meant that there definitely would be a season 8 which was confirmed by one of the leading actresses, Eva Longoria, also. The price signed for the last season to be was 12 million American dollars. This amazing deal with ABC raised the hopes of the whole crew for yet another season, season 9. The official agreement for season 8 with the ABC studios was signed on May 17, 2011.

The final season of Desperate Housewives

A few months after making the official agreement for the eighth season the rumors were confirmed. In august, 2011, it was published that the eighth season of Desperate Housewives would also be the last one. All the hopes of the crew for season 9 were completely dashed. However, leading actresses parted with the ABC production and Marc Cherry with tons of gratitude for the life-changing experience they have had while filming it.

Desperate Housewives Episode Guide

Desperate Housewives Season 1

The initial episode was aired on 3 October, 2004. We get to know the leading characters in the show through the main mystery around which the first season revolves. The shocking thing that happened on Wisteria Lane, the suicide of Mary Alice Young, evokes the alertness for the neighbors on the street. The four central characters, all four housewives, try to dig out is it really a suicide of if the deceased’s husband – Paul Young, played by Mark Moses, has something to do with it or not. They also find Mary Alice’s son Zack, played by Cody Kash, a bit frightened but also a possible suspect in their own scenario for the murder of their beloved neighbor and friend. But, the central characters Susan Mayer, Lynette Scavo, Gabrielle Solis and Bree van de Kamp have their own battles to fight too. The major events that happen to them at the beginning of the show are versatile in nature but equally intriguing an at times even funny. For instance, Susan gets into a catfight over the attention of a man with unstable neighbor Edie Britt, played by Nicollette Sheridan. Mike Delfino, played by James Denton is the man over who the two friendly neighbors are now almost deadly enemies. As for Lynette, she is the typical motherly figure whose prime purpose in life is the protection and the upbringing of her, rather troublesome, children. The relationship with her husband Tom Scavo is not brilliant either which makes things for Lynette even worse. The most attractive one of the group obviously is the ex model- Gabrielle Solis. She is married to a rich and handsome husband, Carlos Solis, played by Ricardo Antonio Chavira. Even though the love and respect towards her husband are great she still feels like something is terribly missing from her life which pushes her in the arms of their gardener. The affair develops and Gabrielle is out of her mind terrified that her husband doesn’t find out about it. The perfectionist of the group is Bree Van de Kamp who struggles to save the not so perfect marriage to Rex Van de Kamp, played by Steven Culp.

Desperate Housewives Season 2

The premiere of the second season was scheduled for September 25, 2005. The key mystery in this season is the new neighbor on Wisteria Lane – Betty Applewhite, played by Alfred Woodard. The reason why the group of housewives worked up their imagination was the strange hour of moving in. the new neighbor literally joined the neighborhood late and night and under, according to them, suspicious circumstances. When it comes to the personal lives of our heroines there are some turbulences there too. Bree, for example, lost her husband and after that she struggles to find the meaning of her life. She turns to alcohol, promiscuous behavior, reckless activities and even accidentally dating her late husband’s murderer. She and her son are growing apart at a mighty fast rate and there is absolutely nothing she can do about it. Susan has a lot on her plate at the time and all that is topped up when in this season her ex-husband- Karl Mayer, played by Richard Burgi, comes in the picture. Karl is extremely handsome and quickly caught Edie’s eye. Edie and Karl promptly got engaged, but he is not sure if his feelings towards Susan are completely gone. Lynette gets tired of being a stay-at-home mum and makes an effort to go back in the working lane. She starts a job in advertizing where she proves to be awesome. Her husband Tom, played by Doug Savant, thinks that staying at home is amazing and doesn’t see why Lynette hates it so much, but soon enough he sees her part of the story. Gabi is sick of playing games and realizes that maybe it is time for her and Carlos to have a baby. Her mother-in-law gets on her nerves, but all in all Gabrielle manages well. The neighbor they suspected murdered his wife in season 1, Paul Young, is imprisoned but not for the murder they have all been hoping for but for another murder which was not even real, but staged one.

Desperate Housewives Season 3

This season’s premiere was aired on September 24, 2006. In the third season the crucial mystery is the dead body discovered in the neighborhood and the person who is behind it. As it turns out the person responsible for this gruesome murder is no other than Bree Van de Kamp’s brand new husband- Orson Hodge, played by Kyle MacLachlan. At the Scavo’s house things are not less sizzling either. Tom cannot take the pressure of being at home all the time and the fact that he is not the major breadwinner in the family almost tears him apart. In his effort to be useful he is considering to start a family business in the form of a pizzeria. To make matters worse, a girl appears at their doorstep claiming to be Tom’s daughter from another woman. After an unbearable tension Gabi and Carlos crack down too and they get divorces. At times of desperation the former Mrs. Solis finds comfort in the arms of the Mayor of Fairview- Victor Lang, who is more concerned about the opinion of his successful father rather than his wife’s. Susan is attending bedridden Mike, who is in a comma after Bree’s new husband run him over. After awakening Mike cannot remember anything, not even Susan. The persistent Edie sees her opportunity here and tries to stick up to Mike. Susan on the other hand finds comfort in an Englishman who also spends day and night at the hospital beside his wife’s bed. Susan’s daughter Julie, played by Andrea Bowen, starts a romantic relationship with Edie’s relative. The light is shed on the sweet elderly lady- Karen McCluskey, played by Kathryn Joosten, who seems to have a rather suspicious content in her fridge. The third season of Desperate Housewives ends with a shootout at the local shop the outcome of which is two dead bodies.

Desperate Housewives Season 4

The premiere of the fourth season was scheduled on September 30, 2007 and it was broadcast according to the schedule. In the fourth season there is another mystery around which other events developed. In this season the prime mystery is yet another new neighbor. This time it is about Katherine Mayfair, played by Dana Delany. Katherine and her family come back to Wisteria Lane after the long absence of 12 years. The new comers stick to each other a lot which make the air around them even more dreadful. Lynette earns that she has cancer and does everything to win the battle. Her friends are around for support but at times she feels like she cannot take it anymore. Gabrielle’s marriage to the mayor, Victor becomes extremely unbearable. Gabrielle is desperate and realizes she misses Carlos badly. The pair starts an affair which will lead to something else later on. Edie, dates Carlos in this season and would do anything to keep him by her side, although not very successfully. Susan and Mike are married and everything seems perfect in their relationship. Susan discovers that she is expecting a baby and there seems nothing that can shatter their happiness. In the meanwhile Bree’s daughter comes at her mother’s door uncovering a baby bump. Bree decides to fake her own pregnancy and to claim the illegitimate child of her daughter as her own. New neighbors from Chicago move in down the street. The new characters in the fourth season are the gay couple Lee and Bob. Lee is played by Kevin Rahm and Bob by Tuc Watkins. There is a potential tornado disaster by the end of the fourth season which shakes up the main characters as well as all the residents on Wisteria Lane.

Desperate Housewives Season 5

The premiere of the fifth season was on September 28, 2008, but in the show there was a five-year- leap since the season four. What happened in the five years was brought to the viewers by flashbacks and dialogues. There is no main mystery in the fifth season but many minor ones. Although the creator agrees that maybe the main mystery is behind the storyline for Dave Williams, played by Neal McDonough. Dave married Edie and is acting somewhat dodgy. All the time he lives on Wisteria Lane he looks for a way to get revenge on Mike. Mike and Susan are no longer together and it is hard for Susan to cope with the responsibilities that a single mother has. Though times are hard she still finds a speck of hope in the romance with the painter that works for her. Mike starts a relationship with Katherine who is working with Bree. The Scavo family discovers that their son, all grown up in season 5, is involved with a woman who is a lot older than him and also married. Her husband is a night club owner which burns down when most of the residents of Wisteria Lane were in it. Gabrielle and Carlos are back together and now have not only one, but two daughters. However, things are not fabulous as Carlos has a temporarily blindness, and a financial crisis is also hanging over their heads. Bree is all caught up in her new passion in life cooking and catering. She even starts writing and publishing cookbooks and has hardly any time for her needy husband Orson. By the end of the fifth season Edie suddenly dies after a car crash. Her premature death stopped her from sharing the secret about her husband, Dave that she wanted to share with all the residents of Wisteria lane.

Desperate Housewives Season 6

The premiere of the sixth season was on September, 27, 2009. The new neighbor on the street, Angie Bolen, played by Brea de Matteo, brought in the new mystery as well. She is Italian- American wife and mother and she would anything to protect her husband and son. Julie, who was considered to be the perfect child by mother Susan, started an affair which left her with strangling bruises. The identity of the secret strangler is not revealed until the second half of the season. Gabrielle feels threatened by niece, Ana Solis, played by Maiara Walsh, and has a hard time trying to tame the teenage diva that uses her beauty to make boys do everything she asks for. Lynette is working for Carlos and she is proving herself to be a very trustworthy employee. However things don’t go that smoothly in the office later on and Lynette is considering of suing Carlos. Mike and Katherine break up and she starts a strange act. Mike and Susan get back together again. Susan’s ex husband, Karl hooks up with Bree in this season. Bree develops deep affections towards him but it all ends in tears when his rented plane crashes in a structure with Orson inside. By the end of the season the mystery about the newly moved family- the Bolens, is solved as well as the identity of Julie’s strangler.

Desperate Housewives Season 7

This season’s premier was aired on September 26, 2010. The central mystery event around which the stories of the residents’ lives unravel, although indirectly, is the return of the falsely accused murderer, Paul Young. This time Paul comes with another wife and plots a revenge on the neighbors who turned a cold shoulder on him while he most needed support. Renee Perry, the ex-wife of a famous football player, moves in Wisteria Lane. Renee and Lynette’s friendship goes back in college days, when apparently they were inseparable. Renee is filthy rich, seductive and able to make a fuss when none is required. At the Solis’ household things take troubling turn as a friend of Carlos informs him that Juanita is not his and Gabi’s birth daughter and that their actual daughter is staying with the family Sanchez. This happened due to negligence at the hospital when the babies were accidentally switched. Carlos and Gabrielle want to find their biological daughter, which search will lead them to Las Colinas – Gabrielle’s home town. Bree has divorced Orson and is now engaged in new romantic activities including a short-term relationship with the person she hired to redo her house after the divorce. Her contractor is extremely handsome and Bree couldn’t help but fall for him. In this season the driver behind the wheel who hit Carlos’ mum is reveled to be Bree’s own son who was driving drunk that night rushing back home to apologies to Bree. This happened in season 1 and all those years Bree kept quiet about the accident that happened to mama Solis in order to protect her son. The uncovering of this truth was not without consequences and Gabrielle and Carlos cut all cords with Bree. Susan and Mike have big money problems and are forced to live Wisteria Lane for a cheaper neighborhood across town. Even with rent smaller they still cannot keep up and Susan decides to do whatever it takes to help her family out including the acceptance of an offer she once dismissed as revolting- being a lingerie model. She is also hurt in a riot and waits for a donation of a vital organ. Lynette discovers that Tom as slept with Renee while they were engaged but were on one of their frequent breakups. She forgives him, but only after he confesses his lie. Tom is almost pushed by Lynette into a new job but that will only result in problems in their marriage and eventually a separation.

The four housewives then decide to cover for Carlos’ deed and come up with a story that they should hold on to in case it is necessary. Bree starts dating Chuck Vance, played by Jonathan Cake. Chuck is a detective who will start investigating Alexandro’s murder. This puts Bree in the center of the investigation and the one who will take the greater part of the burden herself even the accusation of murdering Gabrielle’s dead stepfather. Renee’s attention will be caught by the new neighbor, Australian Ben Faulkner, played by Charles Mesure. The pair gets romantically involved and Renee seems to develop genuine feelings for this guy. Ben hires Mike for the piping job on his real estate project, where the dead body of Aejandro is disposed. Ben has some financial issues and involves himself with shark loans to manage to save his project. In this season Mike somehow stands in the middle between his friend and neighbor Ben and the loan shark. This dangerous issue ends with the murder of Mike while sitting on his own doorstep. Susan is broken all the way, first because she cannot bear to be involved in something as illegitimate as covering up for someone’s death, even if it is the one of an old pervert, and later on she cannot quiet the pain of losing the love of her life. In the meanwhile Susan has to find a solution for Julie’s pregnancy. Initially Julie wants to give the baby up for adoption so she could move on with her studies and then her carrier but Susan somehow manages to dissuade her. As it turns out Julie is pregnant by Lynette’s son, Porter. Susan is not the only one feeling guilty about what happened to Alexandro, Carlos too cannot erase the scene from his head. He resorts to drinking and develops addiction towards alcohol. Gaby sees that this can destroy her husband and sends him in a fancy rehab place. During Carlos’s rehab she finds a job as a personal shop assistant and makes a lot of money. For the first time ever she and Carlos switch roles when it comes to providing for the family. When Tom and Lynette get separated Lynette is surprised and a little hurt by the swiftness with which Tom has moved on. She uses her daughter to spy on her father and his new girlfriend. Lynette is very resourceful in this season and uses Tom’s boss to keep Tom busy with extra load of work and consequently to spend less time with his co-worker and lover. At this point Lynette realizes that she cannot have anything to do with Tom’s boss because she still has strong feelings for Tom. The elderly Mrs. McCluskey is having some health issues. She feels depressed and thinks that it would be best if she took her own life. Luckily Bree succeeds in convincing her that life is worth living.

For season three Cherry was completely committed to the shows and there was no room for error no more. However he did not predict that one of the crucial actresses, Marcia Cross had to take a maternity leave due to her complicated pregnancy. She wasn’t able to film much which was a reason enough for concern but still the views of the show didn’t drop as low as the creator had feared. For season 3 the number of views was 17.5 million. After the leave of Macia there was more room for the character of Edie which adds to the fact that the number of viewers aged between 18 and 24 escalated in this season. Although it didn’t finish being among the 3o most watched TV shows in viewers it still was among the 25 most watched shows for the audience aged between 18 and 49.
