All talks were delivered in English at this weekend’s LDS General Conference, changing a practice that was new just one year ago.
In September 2014, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced it would give conference speakers whose native tongue was not English the option of delivering sermons in their own language.
“Decisions about general conference proceedings rest with the First Presidency who have decided that all talks for this weekend’s sessions will be given in English,” church spokesman Eric Hawkins told The Universe in an email.
Several conference speakers, like Elder Francisco J. Viñas and Elder Hugo Montoya, are from outside the United States, but delivered their addresses in English. Conference addresses are translated into 67 other languages to serve the needs of a world-wide audience.
Many individuals used social media to share their thoughts about the English-only sessions, with some even asking the LDS Church to bring it back.
