Jan. 23: Tyler Haws scores 48 points in a triple-overtime loss to Portland on the road. It was Haws’ highest scoring game of his career, and the third-highest individual scoring output in BYU basketball history, only behind Jimmer Fredette.
Feb. 2: BYU football gets a big wave of football transfers, including Jordan Leslie, Nick Kurtz and Devon Blackmon.
Feb. 10: BYU student Kate Hansen takes 10th place overall in the women’s luge in the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
Feb. 16: BYU running back Jamaal Williams is arrested for underage drinking. He was later suspended for the first game of the football season.
March 11: BYU basketball G/F Kyle Collinsworth tears his ACL in the WCC Championship game against Gonzaga, a game BYU would eventually lose.
March 20: BYU basketball loses to Oregon as a No. 10 seed in the first round of the NCAA tournament. They had previously lost to Oregon that season, 100-96 in overtime.
March 22, 24: BYU women’s basketball enters the NCAA tournament as a 12 seed, and defies all odds by defeating No. 5 North Carolina State and No. 4 Nebraska in the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament.
March 29: BYU women’s basketball loses to No. 1 UConn in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. BYU even took a second half lead against the eventual national champions.
April 26: The BYU men’s volleyball team defeats Stanford to win its second conference championship in a row, clinching a spot in the NCAA tournament.
May 2: The men’s volleyball team loses to Stanford in the semifinals of the NCAA tournament in a rematch of the conference championship game. It was National Player of the Year Taylor Sanders’ last game as a Cougar.
May 3: The BYU rugby team defeats Cal to win its third straight national championship.
May 16: Kyle Davis transfers to BYU from Utah State, completing a big year for basketball transfers. Chase Fischer and Jamal Aytes had also previously transferred to BYU.
June 15: The San Antonio Spurs defeat LeBron James and the Miami Heat, 104-87 in five games to win their fifth championship in 15 seasons. This would be James’ last game as a member of the Heat.
July 1: Belgium defeats the United States 2-1 in the World Cup in extra time. U.S. Goal keeper Tim Howard made 16 saves throughout the match, setting a new World Cup record and keeping the U.S. in the game.
Aug. 29: Former BYU quarterback Max Hall is arrested in Arizona on allegations of shoplifting and cocaine possession.
Oct. 3: The BYU football team’s previously undefeated record comes to a screeching halt in a 35-20 loss to Utah State. Taysom Hill also broke his leg that game, ending his Heisman Trophy hopes.
Nov. 1: The women’s soccer team defeats Pacific to clinch the WCC championship for the third year in a row.
Nov. 14: BYU basketball plays its first game in years without Cecil Samuelson as BYU’s president, ending the “Whoosh, Cecil” chant. A new chant, “Whoosh, Kevin,” starts in the student section, in honor of new president Kevin Worthen.
Nov. 15: The women’s soccer team falls to Colorado 2-0 in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
Nov. 15: The BYU football team defeats UNLV to clinch bowl eligibility for the 10th year in a row.
Nov. 22: The women’s volleyball team defeats Gonzaga to clinch as WCC champions.
Nov. 22: The men’s cross country team finishes 16th overall in the National Championship.
Dec. 2: Men’s basketball defeats Utah State 91-81 at The Spectrum for the first time since Jan. 8, 2000.
Dec. 5: Women’s volleyball defeats Seton Hall and Arizona to make it to the Sweet 16.
