The Korean Cultural Centre UK presents Dialogues of Space, an exhibition that explores physical and metaphorical spaces through the medium of photography by Korean contemporary artists Onejoon Che and Heeseung Chung. The exhibition, on show from 15 December 2015, has been curated by MA students from the Whitechapel Gallery and London Metropolitan University.

Onejoon Che’s precise documentary photographs of architectural structures, abandoned urban sites and buildings provides a conceptual counterpoint to Heeseung Chung’s large-scale, intimate and poetic interiors, opening up a discourse on human presence and its echoes through cityscapes.

Seen together, these bodies of works show personal and political spaces in Korea’s present social and physical landscape. Sparking a discussion of the role of contemporary art in the representation of society, Dialogues of Space highlights the skill and versatility in contemporary Korean photography.

This exhibition is part of the KCCUK-Collaboration. It is an annual exhibition programme at the Korean Cultural Centre UK that aims to support emerging curators from UK art educational institutions. Over the last decade the opportunities for young curators to present their practices have become less available in the UK. By encouraging partnerships between emerging curators in the UK and Korean artists, this programme aims to support various types of curatorial research and exhibition projects through bilateral collaboration with contemporary Korean art.

Event Details

Public access to this exhibition is by appointment only, and is limited to 10am-Midday Wednesdays and Saturdays.

The Arts Club is delighted to announce Dansaekhwa: Minimal Korean Art of the 1970s, an exhibition focusing on the masters of one of the late 20th century’s most compelling art movements. Translated as ‘Monochrome’, Dansaekhwa refers to a radical style of minimal painting that emerged in South Korea in the 1970s, characterized by reductive, meditative compositions and a neutral colour palette. Works by masters Chung Sang-Hwa, Ha Chong-Hyun, Kwon Young-Woo, Lee Ufan and Park Seo-Bo will be on display.

With a strong aesthetic ideal focused on the unity between artist and nature, each artist of the radical Dansaekhwa movement forged a new and refined approach to repetition and mark making.

Early practitioners of the Dansaekhwa movement were considered particularly groundbreaking for the use of non-traditional materials not commonly associated with art. Ha Chong-Hyan (b.1935) incorporates fishing nets, newspaper and burlap sacks into his work. Pushing paint through the fabric of the sacks, and dragging paint along its surface with various materials, he subverts the traditional application of oil to canvas and control associated with brushwork.

The works of Chung Sang-Hwa (b.1932) and Kwon Young-Woo (1926-2013) employ laborious and meditative working methods to invoke a feeling of calm in the viewer. Chung folds a primed canvas to allow fragments of zinc paint to flake or be removed from the surface. He then carefully applies the resultant negative space with acrylic paint resulting in subtle, near-imperceptible gradations in tone. Kwon builds up

thin layers of traditional Korean paper, tearing, scratching, and dousing the surfaces with ink, in an endeavor to create a sense of pure harmony between the two materials.

One of the fundamental concepts of Dansaekhwa is the idea of the artist as conduit of his energy or consciousness into an artwork, and this can be manifested in references to language. Lee Ufan (b.1936) engages a philosophical approach through the use of repetition in his work, exploring themes of gesture and mark-making. His repeated lines and dashes reference the profound discipline of traditional calligraphy; Park Seo-Bo (b.1931) employs simple but dramatic gestures that allude to a rudimentary and unknown linguistic system.

The Arts Club curators bring together a selection of rare master works from this art movement following an extraordinary surge in recognition in these underappreciated artists among art world audiences. The exhibition coincides with a solo exhibition of Park Seo-Bo at White Cube in January 2016.

The exhibition is curated by Amelie von Wedel and Pernilla Holmes from Wedel Art.

We are delighted to open registration for the LSE SU Korea Future Forum 2016!

When: 6th February 2016

Where: Old Theatre, Old Building, LSE

Registration Deadline: 1st February 2016

The LSE KFF is the largest student-run forum in the world discussing social, political and economic matters of the Korean peninsula. We aim to raise awareness of the political, economical and social issues of Korea, and encourage the discussion of such topics between students, throughout Europe

To be held on the 6th February 2016 at the LSE Old Theatre, the 2016 forum will be held under the topic of “Korea-EU FTA: After 5 Years of EU’s First Trade Deal with an Asian Country, Korea”. We will explore Free-Trade Agreements and their costs and benefits, specifically in the context of the bilateral relations between Korea and the EU. The forum includes keynotes, panel discussions and debates about the economic impact of the KOR-EU FTA, recently drafted Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), South Korea’s Multi-Trace FTA Strategy, analysis of the effect of trade on the automobile and law industry and many more. With the Korea-EU FTA reaching its fifth anniversary this year, and EU’s plan to soon expand trade relations to other Asian countries, the topic is more relevant than ever.

We have confirmed highly influential speakers including:

* Bark Taeho – Former Minister of Trade of Korea

* Fredrik Erixon – Co-founder of ECIPE & Brussel’s 30 Most Influential People by FT

* Signe Ratso – Director in the European Commission’s Directorate General for Trade

* Patrick Messerlin – Chairman of ECIPE’s Steering Committee/Advisory Board

* Tom Jenkins – Chair of European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC)

* Warwick Morris – Former British Ambassador to South Korea

* Tony Dymond – Former Managing Partner of Herbert Smith Freehill’s Seoul Office

* Donna Evans – International Policy Advisor of North Asia and the Pacific at the Law Society

* Hosuk Lee – Makiyama – 20 Most Influential People for Open Internet by the readers of the Guardian

* John Hilary – Executive Director at the War on Want

This event has been made possible by the support of Doosan Yonkang Foundation, LSE Annual Fund, Export-Import Bank of Korea, Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the United Kingdom, and the LSE Department of Law.

The KFF is a unique chance for students to gain experience, knowledge, and contacts. We strongly encourage any student from any degree or discipline to apply to attend this educational event. Deadline for applications is the 1st February 2016 and applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Upon successful applicants we will send out emails to purchase the ticket.
