Summary:

The United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1500 is the largest grocery retail union in New York with over 20,000 members working in grocery stores, pharmacies, and other industry jobs. We are a committed to building a powerful union that fights for economic, political, and social justice in our workplaces and communities.

We are seeking a self-motivated, skilled and enthusiastic person to join our team.

Main Function: To assist in communicating with members and non-members through a multitude of media outlets, including print, photo, video, press relations, and electronic communications with a focus on supporting contract negotiations and organizing campaigns. Communications activities include web site management, social media, email communications, newsletters and occasional videos highlighting our members’ work.

Principal duties and requirements:

Ensure that the organizational message is clear, consistent and frequent

Produce periodic communications to members; e.g. daily posts on social media such as Facebook and Twitter

Write press releases, blogs, magazine articles, brochures, flyers, and other organizational materials, as assigned.

Develop Union materials; e.g. Literature for members and non-members, newsletters, newspapers and other print materials.

Build and maintain relationships with media/reporters

Commitment to social justice and worker’s rights required.

Ability to engage and inspire people regardless of religion, race, gender, sexual orientation, age, language, class and/or experiences is required.

Must be flexible and willing to work long irregular hours, early mornings, evenings, and weekends

Must have a reliable insured car and valid driver’s license

Must be able to work in a fast-paced team environment

Preferably live centrally within Local 1500’s jurisdiction

Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds

Labor, political, or community activism/organizing experience is preferred

Bilingual speaking (Spanish) is preferred

Qualifications:

Experience in communications or public relations role is preferred

Experience with branding and marketing in Labor industry is ideal

Impeccable oral and written communications skills

Proficiency in social media, including but not limited to, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube

Knowledge in email marketing platforms and digital video editing

Experience working with a variety of vendors to deliver print, video and digital products for marketing purposes

Salary:

This position offers a competitive salary, commensurate with experience. Full time position is subject to a probation period of six months.
