The next big PlayStation 4 update (4.50, to be precise) is on its way, bringing with it a slew of new features and tweaks to Sony’s box of joy.
Key features include support for external hard drives (finally!), the ability to use in-game screenshots and other fun stuff as custom wallpapers, and additional improvements to the quick menu, which was overhauled in the last update.

Now, I’m sure these new features have you all quivering with unbridled excitement – but hold on to your knickers my friends, because there’s more.
Writing on the PlayStation Blog, Vice President, PlayStation Brand Marketing, SIEA John Koller explained how we can look forward to improved 2D images on PS VR.
He explained:
If you’re playing a game in PS VR and you return to the PS4 home screen, you may notice that the resolution looks lower than normal on the TV Social Screen. Following this update, you’ll find that the resolution of the system screen displayed on your TV is significantly better when you’re out of VR mode.
Voice chat is also being enabled for remote play on PC, Mac, and Xperia devices, and we can look forward to a new icon that indicates a player is logged into the PSN, but away from their system.

PS4 Pro is getting an exclusive new feature called Boost Mode, which has been designed to provide better performance for ‘select legacy titles’ that haven’t been patched to take advantage of the Pro’s hardware.
This will apparently provide a ‘collectible’ frame rate boost, and ‘can provide frame rate stability for games that are programmed to run at 30 Hz or 60 Hz’.
Depending on the game, we might also be able to enjoy shorter load times, which is nice. Boost Mode can be turned on/off at any time in the settings menu.

The 4.50 update is expected to roll out any time today, so stay frosty – and remember that this Boost Mode ‘isn’t guaranteed’ to work with all PS4 games.
