2014-12-19

We are pleased to share the report from the UNICEF Innovation Team’s global meeting in Malaysia on November 10-12, 2014. The key highlights from the meeting included cross-regional networking, lessons learned from failures (and successes), and identification of common challenges across regions. The group also explored solutions that UNICEF is using to deliver better results for children.

The meeting focused on the four areas that the Executive Director has indicated he would like UNICEF’s Innovations Unit to focus on in 2015. These have broadly been articulated as:

1. Country Office Support

Enabling country offices to scale innovations and measure impact of innovations to Programme Outcomes, specifically (in 2015) uReport and Real Time Information systems.

2. Partnerships

Leveraging alliances and partnerships in the Technology and Innovation space (being led out of San Francisco).

3. Innovation Fund

Managing the Innovation Fund, with three portfolios: Youth Engagement (Gen-Z), Real Time Information, and Infrastructure. The fund will provide financial and technical support to country offices working on innovations in these areas, and will be launching in Q1, 2015.

4. Communications

Telling the story of UNICEF as a convener and supporter of open innovations, as well as creating guidance around how planned projects, on-going projects and lessons learnt (particularly failures) are communicated.

These four areas are in line with the areas of innovation that regional and country offices have also identified as areas of focus for 2015.
