Galway City, Republic of Ireland (6/27-8/2016)

Galway City Main Street

Located on the rugged Atlantic Coast of western Ireland, Galway City is one of the most authentic Irish cities and fun for a day or two stop.

We liked walking through Galway City's pedestrian-only streets with the brightly painted storefronts and pubs. At night lively traditional Irish music flows out of the pubs inviting you in for a pint and some foot tapping music – great fun!

McCambridge's Food Hall -
Galway City, Ireland

The food in Galway City is surprisingly good. Seafood is Galway’s specialty offered by most the restaurants. Oscar’s on Dominic Street in the West Side on the other side of the Wolfetone Bridge is one of Galway City's best seafood restaurants. The West Side area is the place for Galway’s new trendy restaurants.

The Pie Maker Restaurant -
Galway City, Ireland

McCambridge’sfood hall on Shop Street in the pedestrian-only zone is a classic place is a must stop on your visit to Galway City. The variety of foods is interesting and you can try some Irish whisky for free. McCambridge’s has a highly rated café for lunch. We loved the pretty Cross Street Upper Street where you should try a pie at very cute The Pie Maker restaurant... so good!

Sonny Molloy's Irish Pub -
Galway City, Ireland

For entertainment and when you ‘fancy a pint’, you can certainly find a pub that you will like among the many pubs in Galway City, especially concentrated along High Street and Quay Street. If you are looking for some Irish products and souvenirs, you will like the Treasure Chest on Shop Street.

Claddagh
Ring

A romantic symbol for love, friendship, and loyalty, the famous Claddagh Ring has for centuries been connected with Galway City. You can buy them at Claddagh Jewellers on Shop Street and Fallers on Williamsgate Street.

Galway Cathedral -

Bridges cross over the seasonal salmon-filled River Corrib. If you like riverboat cruises, you can take the 2-hour scenic river and lake cruise offered by Corrib Princess with its commentary of the scenery of Lough Corrib – relaxing but there is not a lot to see. There are several theatres around Galway City that offer local plays and entertainment.

Claddagh Street -
Galway City, Ireland

On a nice day, you can enjoy the 30-minute walk to Salthill(a seaside village) along the Prom, a seaside promenade that starts along Claddagh Street across Galway City's Wolfetone Bridge. Alternatively, for a small fare you can take bus #1 to and from Salthill from the bus stop on Station Street near Eyre Square.

Bus tours from Galway City are offered to many interesting sites in the area (i.e. Cliffs of Moher, Aran Islands, beautiful Connemara, and other places).

Dining Room -
Park House Hotel,
Galway City, Ireland

We enjoyed staying at elegant The Park House Hotelwith its extremely central location – just step out the door and you are in the action and minutes from everything. The comfortable rooms with nice modern amenities (including bathtub) makes for a great stay in Galway City. The staff is wonderful, very helpful, and willing to tell you what to do in Galway City and book excursions for you. Breakfast is served in one of the most elegant dining rooms we have seen. Included parking and good Wi-Fi is available.

Beautiful Irish Countryside

Travel advise about visiting Ireland:While visiting Ireland, we learned a few important lessons. The beauty of our Ireland experience was more about the genuine Irish people and beauty of the countryside and less so about how many important sites and buildings there are to visit. We found the best pub experience in the world in Ireland. So, slow down, enjoy the vibrantly green countryside, the Irish people, and visit a pub or two when you ‘fancy a pint’.

Irish Pub - Galway City, Ireland

Beer drinkers: It is not a myth that Guinness beer tastes better in Ireland. It most certainly does! Although a wonderful beer anywhere in the world, a slightly different process is done for the beer made for export. So, drink up and enjoy.
