Bletillas need plenty of sunlight to get good flowering. I get asked by many people why their bletilla do not flower and usually the answer is they have been growing in semi-shade. Having discussed various growing methods with Richard Evendon (Penway hybrids) I divide stock immediately after flowering and feed regularly throughout the season. Plants are kept slightly damp throughout the winter and in a near frost free environment. I also wonder if there are clones of striata about that are do not produce many flowers. I now use a mix of perlite, composted bark and a small amount of fine organic matter. Pots I goet from Richard contained a very sandy loam.
