Today is April 4. It is the independence day of Senegal. Actually, this is the day that that Senegal and French Sudan (currently Mali) gained their independence simultaneously, merged to form the Mali Federation. Both independent nations gained their independence from the European colonial power France. However, France was not the only European power that had its colonial hands all over Senegal. The Portuguese, British and Dutch got in on the prize as well.

It wasn’t until four months later did both countries form as two independent nations and go their separate ways. On August 19th, 1960, the Federation no longer existed and the country of Senegal became its own country. The current president of Senegal is Macky Sall

Special thoughts to our brothers and sisters on this day.
