On this day in 1963, Edward J. Dwight Jr. was chosen as a member of the Aerospace Research Pilots at Edwards Airforce Base and became the first black astronaut candidate. He was dropped from the program in 1965.

In 1969, entertainer Sammy Davis Jr. received the 53rd NAACPs Spingarn medal for his multi-faceted talent, his participation in the civil rights movement, and for his dedication to freedom, justice, quality, and the brotherhood of all mankind.
