Adam Conrad, on behalf of the Ubuntu Release Team, announces the last beta release of "Xenial Xerus" Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Desktop, Server, Cloud, and Core products, along with the participating flavors. He writes that the teams have been hard at work through this cycle, introducing new features and fixing bugs.

Philip Ballew gives us a brief description of his recent Ubuntu talk at the San Diego Linux Users Group. He says, "I spoke about ways to customize your Ubuntu desktop, the talk finished a little earlier than the group meeting was planned to go to, so I used that time to talk about some of the server stuff with Ubuntu, as well as the switch to systemd." Nicholas Skaggs: Reflections

Nicholas Skaggs reflects upon the work he's done in Quality Assurance over the past couple years, and thanks folks who have been involved, writing: "Oftentimes quality can be a background job, with thank you's going unsaid, while complaints are easy to find. Truly, it's been wonderful learning and hacking on quality efforts with you. So thank you!"

In what he admit sounds like a farewell, he announces that moving forward he will be transitioning to working on improving the quality story for Juju.

Julian Andres Klode: Dropping SHA-1 support in APT

Julian Andres Klode discusses the move to disable SHA1 support for future releases, packages and source files, writing that "disabling the SHA1 support requires a bit of patching in our test suite, it's best to do that now than later when we're forced to do it." He continues by sketching out a timeline for completion of this switch, including enforcement of SHA2 for GPG signatures.

Xubuntu 16.04 Wallpaper Competition

The Xubuntu team announces the beginning of the wallpaper contest for images to be submitted for inclusion in the Xubuntu community wallpapers package for the 16.04 release. They outline submission terms, guidelines and procedures and note that the deadline for submissions is April 1st.

Ubuntu App Developer Blog: Ride With Us: The Road To UI Toolkit 2.0

Zsombor Egri states the problems with the current Toolkit 1.3 implementation and explains why the developement for version 2.0 will start soon. He writes that toolkit 2.0 will break the API and make it more flexible but that the performance of Toolkit 2.0 should be much better because they will not rely heavily on Javascript anymore. Development will be made in a lab module, where they're asking community members to try out each component before it lands to the stable module.

SDK Planning for 16.10

Zoltan Balogh from the Ubuntu SDK Team highlights some goals for the Ubuntu SDK in 16.10, "We have a clear commitment for the upcoming cycle: We will make it faster!" They point out some feature gaps they have to close, the need and progress on an API tracker, and the release cycle they plan on using. They end by pointing out their emphasis on openness, "We will keep publishing technical blog posts and videocasts about what is going on in the SDK workshops. We welcome all contributions to our projects and we are going to participate in various events to hear developers and to share information."

Yet Another Reason Why Ubuntu MATE 16.04 Will Rock

Joey-Elijah Sneddon of OMG! Ubuntu! highlights some interesting changes relating to GTK in Ubuntu MATE that will land in Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS, set to release in late April, from Martin Wimpress' recent Google+ post. He says, "Ubuntu MATE 16.04 will offer full support for Client Side Decoration (CSD) and GTK Header Bar applications out of the box." He goes on to point out a screenshot and some applications that could use this, "Header bars span a range of apps, from the increasingly useful GNOME Photos to the geek-friendly Polari IRC client and by way of the fantastic Corebird desktop Twitter app."

NVIDIA GeForce vs. Radeon/AMDGPU OpenGL Performance On Ubuntu 16.04

Michael Larabel of Phoronix writes an article summarizing performance, comparing NVIDIA and AMD OpenGL drivers on Ubuntu Xenial Xerus, the development branch that is set to release in late April. He shows us some statistics using various graphics cards and drivers, for NVIDIA and AMD. He summarizes the results with: "So while it's exciting that the open-source Radeon Linux driver stack is maturing and becoming much more competitive with Catalyst, the whole AMD Linux driver stack with regard to OpenGL performance still needs to be improved. In several of these tests, all of the tested AMD hardware was slower than all of the NVIDIA GeForce hardware."

Logic Supply Unveils New Rugged Industrial Panel PC That Runs Ubuntu or Windows

In this article, Marius Nestor of Softpedia, explains that Logic Supply's Industrial Panel PC which supports both Ubuntu and Windows operating systems. Marius reports that Logic Supply stated that it is for industrial settings in which ruggedness is desired and that JP Ishaq, Head of Product Management at Logic Supply, states that "it's rare to find this combination of quality, performance, and ruggedness in a Panel PC."

It's Official, Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Now Lets Users Move the Unity Launcher to Bottom

Marius Nestor of Softpedia reports about Unity 7's recent integration of a frequently requested feature, the ability to move the launcher to the bottom of the screen. "...Ubuntu Unity developer Marco Trevisan announced yesterday on his Google+ page that Canonical finally decided to merge the hard work done by the Ubuntu Kylin team to bring the Unity 7 Launcher on the bottom edge." He gives instructions about how to do this and a screenshot to show the end result.

Ubuntu being pulled into "game changing" areas - Canonical CEO

Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Ubuntu Canonical, says "Ubuntu developers are now targeting the company's Ubuntu platform for areas such as Network Function Virtualisation and Internet of Things." Mark Shuttleworth states Ubuntu's convergence idea is that we all want to carry one device. Their goal, he states, is to "deliver the same code on a tablet, a phone, and a PC."
