Michael Hall announces that another UbuCon will take place from November 19th to 21st at the Hilton Orlando Lake Buena Vista thanks to the generosity of FOSSETCON. Unity Team: Unity8 Greeter on the Desktop (Split Greeter)
Writing for the Unity team, Josh Arenson brings news of a "split greeter" feature for the Unity 8 shell. The split greeter allows Unity 8 to run both with or without LightDM providing a greeter and lockscreen for Unity, a necessary feature for a convergent device. Josh says that a PPA is available for those interested in trying the new code.

Daniel Holbach: The future of shipping software is coming together
Daniel Holbach announces version 0.2 of Snapcraft, a program that allows developers to easily create snap packages by specifying the location of the source code. This new version brings new tests, features, and bug fixes; as well as a potentially stable syntax for snapcraft.yaml.

Charles Profitt: Ubuntu 15.10 Bluetooth Still Not Working
Charles Profitt reports that his Logitech MX Anywhere 2 mouse doesn't work with the beta of Ubuntu 15.10 which has improved support for low energy bluetooth devices. He has found that it works with Fedora 22 and says that he finds it hard to think that he might have to wait a further six months for it to work with Ubuntu.

Riccardo Padovani: How many Ubuntu Phones there are?
Riccardo Padovani informs us that as an app developer he often asks himself how many Ubuntu phones there are so uses the number of times the Calculator App has been updated to help him guess the answer. Riccardo shows us how he arrived at a figure of around 25,000, adding that Canonical has a target but doesn't want to make it public so there is no way of knowing if the sales of the Ubuntu phone are a success or not.

Crowdsourcing the #AppEnabledHome: GE, FirstBuild and Canonical
Maarten Ectors from Canonical informs us that GE Appliance, FirstBuild and Canonical are working together to define a IoT standard applicable to any type of home appliance from any vendor by adopting a novel approach for doing this: "Crowdsourcing IoT Standards". He says: "Via a series of contests and a crowdfunding campaign we want to crowdsource the future of the app-enabled home. The end-result will be open sourced hence anybody can benefit from it."

snapcraft Is a New Tool From Canonical to Build Snappy Packages
Silviu Stahie of Softpedia reports on Canonical's new snapcraft tool which allows users to package anything, pulling in all dependencies from the repositories in a few easy steps. He says that Snappy packages are far from being the norm for desktop distributions but they will make things much easier for developers.

Ubuntu Touch Lets You Use Alt-Tab on Phones and Tablets
Silviu Stahie writing for Softpedia reminds us that Canonical's aim is to have a single operating system running on all platforms. Through an animated GIF Silviu demonstrates the ability of the OS to recognise Alt-Tab when a keyboard is connected a tablet running Ubuntu. He embeds a video in his post which shows some of the features that are coming to the Ubuntu phone in Desktop Mode.

Ubuntu Touch Receives New Mir, Unity 8, Ubuntu Download Manager, and Web Browser
Marius Nestor of Softpedia refers to some recent reports from Lukasz Zemczak which informed us that many new features have been added to the version of Ubuntu Touch that will be released around October 19th. Marius says that the update, which will be known as OTA-7, will contain a new Ubuntu UI Toolkit that includes lots of bug fixes, a new Web Browser app that adds the ability to search in history, various string changes, as well as an initial implementation of a context menu for selected text.
