Hey,

I am using a Mid 2014 Macbook Pro Retina (11,1) with onboard graphics and the latest OS X Yosemite 10.10.3.

In university a course requires the use of Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. Even though I managed to boot the system with "nomodeset" the user interface reacts really slow. Also the system settings for DPI and screen resolution don't work. When started in live mode via USB-Stick everything works fine.

Here are the steps I followed after reading through numerous tutorials:

1) I downloaded the latest Ubuntu 64-Bit iso from the official website [0]

2) Follow the tutorial for the creation of bootable USB-sticks under Mac OS X[1]

3) At first I wanted to install Ubuntu without the use of a boot selector as described in the tutorial.[2][3] Before entering grub the following message showed up for <1 second:

Code:

Could not open "\EFI\BOOT\fallback.efi": 14

error: file 'boot' not found

After selecting one of the boot options the screen remained black with backlight on. Using "nomodeset" and/or "XXXX" did not help.

4) After I felt that I spend too time searching around the internet I changed my mind and installed refind[4]. Selecting the normal boot options still brought up the same fallback.efi and black screen problems.

5) Using the alternate fallback (4 grey squares) starter helped. With "nomodeset" activated I was able to start up both the live system and the installation.

6) In live mode the system reacted as quick as I was used to from my past experience with Ubuntu. Under system settings I was able to change both DPI and screen resolution.

7) After succesfull installation and restart the alternate options for the screen resolution were gone. Changing the DPI did not have any effect. Also the overall system reacted really slow.

8) I edited the grub settings file to use nomodeset on startup without any effect[5]

9) In the "additional drivers" tab of the software center there is an entry for the wifi-driver, no word about graphics.

What do I have to do in order to get my system running smoothly?

Best regards

Elias
