RAF aircraft in the 1950s were often painted High Speed Silver all over or on the undersides. It was a paint/laquer and is NOT natural metal.

Trying to find a shade of model paint that emulates the rather uniform and dullish sheen of High Speed Silver is a bit of a challenge. I recently completed the old Frog Meteor 4 in an all High Speed Silver finish, partly as an experiment to see if I could get close to what I think High Speed Silver looks like.

There is a thread on the completed Meteor in this forum but to save searching, here's a photo of the completed model so you can judge for yourself whether my efforts match reality.

The technique I used was to spray the model overall with an undercoat of Tamiya grey primer, rub that down to a slight sheen using sanding cloths and then spray on a top coat of Alclad White Aluminium.

Eric,

RAF aircraft were Always painted High speed silver. It was very unusual to see a natural metal aircraft.
Natural metal would corrode at speed in the UK climate.
