Cheers Shane, life's a bitch and then you get difficult to use decals

I managed to finally get a start on the Airfix Lancaster this weekend. For once, I airbrushed rather than hand painted the interior. Paint used is a 90's tinlet of Hu-78, which went on with no dramas. After leaving the base coat overnight, I then carried out the detail painting, which was black parts mainly and to vary the shades I used Tamiya matt black, Tamiya gloss black for the areas to be decalled and Tamiya NATO Black. Once that lot had dried, I applied a wash of heavily thinned Tamiya matt black and a wash using the contents of my acrylic paint brush cleaning jar. The ribs and stringers were then highlighted with a dry brush of Tamiya Deck Tan and the raised detail on the black areas was drybrushed with Tamiya aluminium.

On the above shot, note the decal for the Flight Engineer's station. TBH I'm not all that keen on the Airfix New Tool panel decals as I find them to be a little bright. Personally I would have sooner been given a panel with raised dials to drybrush. That said though, the decals behaved well and although the IP decal was a little fiddly due to the lumps and bumps that it was expected to conform to, it settled down well using Microscale solutions.

The pilot's and nav section is reasonably well detailed and I tarted the pilot's seat up using etched belts from an old Reheat set.

Finally, in an effort to add a little bit extra detail, I used the foil from an old Marlboro cigarette pack (from my former life as a member of the Philip Morris Addicts Society, please note that other types of foil are available ), glued to the plastic floor with PVA, to simulate the anti-slip tread plate on the floor. I'm not 100% about the accuracy of this but have seen a couple of photos online that give a glimpse of something like chequerplate on the floor. I seem to recall the use of cigarette packet foil being used in this way in a Lanc build in the 70's in one of the magazines.

I think that maybe the highlighting is a little overdone and I may tone it down, but then again once the cockpit is buttoned up it will be somewhat darker in there.

Thanks for looking.
