Rifle
The Alaska Nanook Men’s and Women’s Rifle team ended its regular season on the road this last weekend. They competed against the West Virginia University Mountaineers on Thursday, then competed in the Patriot Rifle Conference Championships on Saturday and Sunday
The Nanooks lost to the Mountaineers 4680-4709, in their first and only loss of the regular season. The Nanooks outscored the Mountaineers, 2332-2329 in
smallbore. The Mountaineers, however, won the air rifle discipline 2380-2348. Sophomore English student Lorelie Stanfield le
d all shooters in
smallbore with a 587. Sophomore Mechanical Engineering student Tim Sherry led the Nanooks in air rifle with a 591.
The Nanooks finished in first place in Saturday’s smallbore discipline with a score of 2339, outscoring second-place Texas Christian University by 33. Junior Biological Sciences student Ryan Anderson was crowned the PRC smallbore individual champion. The Nanooks went on too win in Sunday’s air rifle competition as well with a score of 4702, earning their first PRC title in school history. Anderson led the shot a match-best 596, but finished in second place for the individual championship. Since the PRC was formed in 2013, the Nanooks are also the first champions in conference history.
The Nanooks have two weeks off before returning to action. Then they will host the University of Texas-El Paso on Feb. 22 and Nevada on Feb. 23 as NCAA championship qualifying matches. Both matches will take place at the E.F. Horton Rifle Range in the Patty Center at 9 a.m.
Men’s and Women’s Skiing
The Alaska Nanook Men’s and Women’s Ski teams traveled to Ishpeming, Mich. where they competed in the Central Collegiate Ski Association Championships last Saturday and Sunday.
Men
The Nanooks finished in second place out of seven teams in Saturday’s 10-kilometer classic race. Junior Mechanical Engineering student Logan Hanneman came in first place for the Nanooks, winning the individual championship in 20 minutes and 17.8 seconds. Sophomore Mechanical Engineering student Michael Fehrenbach finished in fifth place and senior Business Administration student Max Olex finished in seventh.
The Nanooks competed in a 20-kilomter free skate mass start on Sunday and also finished in second out of seven teams. Hanneman won his second individual championship in as many days, winning in 40 minutes and 23.4 seconds.
Women
The Nanooks finished in fourth place out of eight teams in Saturday’s five-kilometer classic race. The Nanooks competed without freshman Elementary Education student Nicole Bathe who is their top skier. Junior Foreign Language and Geological Engineering student Alyson Mcphetres finished the highest for the Nanooks in ninth place.
Two Nanook skiers finished in the top 10 on Sunday as the team finished in fourth place out of eight. Mcphetres finished in ninth place and senior Civil Engineering student Heather Edic finished in 10th place.
Next Saturday and Sunday, both the men’s and women’s teams will travel to Houghton, Mich.
to compete in the NCAA Central Region Championships.
Men’s Basketball
The Alaska Men’s Basketball team played two games at home against the Montana State University-Billings Yellowjackets last Thursday and Seattle Pacific University Falcons on Saturday.
The Nanooks beat the Yellowjackets, 88-74, thanks to a 19-9 scoring run in the final six minutes of the game. All five Nanook starters finished the game with 10 points or more in the game. Senior forward and Business Administration student Stefan Tica led the team with 21 points.
The Falcons beat the Nanooks on Saturday, 67-56, giving UAF its first home loss of the season. The Nanooks were only down by five at halftime, but the Falcons kept the lead throughout. The Falcons’ biggest lead of the game was 13. Tica led the Nanooks in scoring with 17 points. Senior forward and Justice student Andrew Kelly grabbed eight rebounds.
The Nanooks will compete in their final two games away from home this coming Thursday and Saturday as they take on Northwest Nazarene and Central Washington. The Nanooks’ record is now 8-5 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and 13-8 overall.
Women’s Basketball
The Alaska Nanook Women’s Basketball team played two away games against the Western Oregon University Wolves last Thursday and Saint Martin’s University Saints on Saturday.
The Nanooks lost Thursday’s game 62-51. The Nanooks led 34-29 at halftime, but the Wolves quickly erased that lead in the second half with a 14-0 scoring run to grab a 43-34 lead. The Wolves outscored the Nanooks in the second half, 33-17. Freshman forward and Arts & Sciences student Jordan Wilson led the Nanooks with 17 points.
The Nanooks also lost to the Saints on Saturday, 67-66. The Nanooks’ largest lead of the game was 43-30 early in the second half, but the Saints were able to grab the lead late to secure the victory. Three Nanook players finished with 10 points or more, including freshman guard and Business Administration student Victoria Milton with 15.
The Nanooks’ next game will take place this coming Saturday in Anchorage as they take on the University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves. The Nanooks’ record is now 9-12 overall and 3-10 in the GNAC conference.
