Sure, a mayor is very often the voice of his or her city in an official capacity, but Bill de Blasio really does seem to think he speaks for the entire population of New York City.

No doubt, capturing more than 73 percent of the vote is an impressive feat, but still, fewer than 800,000 people put Mayor de Blasio in office. Something makes us suspect New York is a lot more diverse than its own mayor gives it credit for, but for now, de Blasio isn’t hesitating to launch his own #NeverTrump hashtag.

A single election does not change who we are – we are 8.5 million strong. We are #AlwaysNewYork.

— Bill de Blasio (@NYCMayor) November 21, 2016

Come on, now … that’s the kind of statement that might have been appropriate after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Then again, more than a few people seemed to think Election Day 2016 was comparable. Nevertheless … back to identity politics.

To all Latinos who have heard their culture denigrated – we stand by you.

— Bill de Blasio (@NYCMayor) November 21, 2016

To all the African Americans who have heard their history denied – we stand by you.

— Bill de Blasio (@NYCMayor) November 21, 2016

To all the women who have heard their rights being threatened – we stand by you.

— Bill de Blasio (@NYCMayor) November 21, 2016

To all the Muslims who have have heard their faith belittled – we stand by you.

— Bill de Blasio (@NYCMayor) November 21, 2016

To all those in the Jewish community who have heard a resonance from history that gave them real fear and pause – we stand by you.

— Bill de Blasio (@NYCMayor) November 21, 2016

To all those in the LGBT community who have heard a message of taking us backward – we will never go backward. We stand by you.

— Bill de Blasio (@NYCMayor) November 21, 2016

To all of you – we will protect you. This is your home. We are #AlwaysNewYork.

— Bill de Blasio (@NYCMayor) November 21, 2016

Maybe this is a dumb question, but … who exactly is “we” here? If New York City truly is 8.5 million strong, that would include each of the groups broken out into its own tidy, individual tweet, right?

It sounds like something the tourism bureau came up with to us, but what does anyone else think of #AlwaysNewYork?

@NYCMayor You are correct. You are still the same fraudulent, delusional party you have always been.

— JMAN23 (@Jason_Lehr) November 21, 2016

@NYCMayor I don't think you're taking a good look at the party overall. You're losing much more than this presidential election.

— The Jerk (@wacko00wacko) November 21, 2016

@NYCMayor what does this mean? Empty blathering does not help anyone. Your businesses and cops need your support. That's your job, sir.

— Liam Jusko (@LiamJusko) November 21, 2016

@NYCMayor Why don't you just get with Oprah, "We speak your names."

— Scott Andes (@sandes363) November 21, 2016

.@NYCMayor You campaigned for a corrupt pathological liar. Trump in the WH is on you. Thanks a lot.

— #OurRevolution (@JustAnotherRich) November 21, 2016

@NYCMayor @nycgov except the cops. Fuck those guys, right?

— It's me DT (@dtfromdc) November 21, 2016

@NYCMayor Dude shut up already. You're such a fear mongering fool. I get you're pandering for future votes from people you don't help, damn

— Bananymous (@I3UCKS) November 21, 2016

@NYCMayor you people are absurd. So narcissistic.

— Lady Right (@ladyright1970) November 21, 2016

@NYCMayor @nycgov oh jeez he's still yakking

— slopegal (@slopegal) November 21, 2016

He sure is.
