SENSE8

An American science fiction must watch drama web television series, created by Lana and Lilly Wachowski and J. Michael Straczynski for Netflix. By far the most progressive show on television!

Eight strangers from eight different parts of the world suddenly become “sensates”; human beings who are mentally and emotionally linked. In the process of realizing the depths of their connection, lead characters also discover that they are being hunted and exterminated by the dark forces because connected the 8 super humans present a threat to the system.

The show is filmed on location in eight different countries and has a strong emphasis on an honest representation of the cultures it exposes to the viewer. Both good and bad.

Sense8 aims to explore subjects that have not been emphasized on in the history of television to date, such as sexual identity, sexuality, gender, cultural differences and religion. The show has cast actors from the countries they represent and a transgender actress is actually played by a transgender actress. Some monologues (and sex scenes!) in the show might be straight out challenging to some viewers’ standardized beliefs. They touch upon subjects that are still avoided by most of the entertainment industry. “Sex is the reason you are here, it’s not something to be ashamed of!” says one of the characters. I couldn’t agree more!

Sense8 has become notable for its presentation of LGBT characters and themes, winning the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Drama Series. It has also received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music.

On August 8, 2015, Netflix announced that it had renewed the show for a second season. Netflix released a 2-hour Christmas special on December 23, 2016 to a similar favorable reception; the 10-episode second season is set to be released on May 5, 2017. (source)

STRANGER THINGS

An American must watch science fiction-horror web television series created by the Duffer Brothers. It is written and directed by Matt and Ross Duffer and executive-produced by Shawn Levy.

Truly, there hasn’t been anything this good (and with a leading cast made up almost entirely of kids) since the epic classic movie Stay by Me. Those of us who lived through the 80’s were obsessed with the show from Episode 1. A must watch show if you have nothing to do for the next week, because you are going to be hooked!

The plot follows the disappearance of a young boy, and the appearance of a strange telekinetic girl, who doesn’t have a name, doesn’t talk, but can flip trucks with her mind. This girl helps a few local kids in their search for the lost boy, while the boy’s older brother, his mother (hello Winona Ryder), and the town police chief lead their own investigations. As lead characters slowly uncover the truth about their town’s dark secrets and governments’ involvement in some other strange events in the area, a more insidious force appear from underneath the surface.s Scared yet?

The show was released on Netflix on July 15, 2016. It received critical acclaim for its characterization, pacing, atmosphere, acting, soundtrack, directing, writing, and homages to 1980s genre films.  On August 31, 2016, Netflix renewed the series for a second season of nine episodes, to be released in 2017. The O.A.

An American mystery drama  Netflix television series with science fiction, supernatural, spiritual and fantasy elements.

Created and executive produced by Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, the series stars as a young woman named Prairie Johnson resurfaces after having been missing for seven years. At the time of Prairie’s disappearance she was blind, however, when she comes back, she can see and now calls herself “The OA”. Prarie also exhibits strange scars on her back, and refuses to tell the FBI and her family where she has been and how her eyesight was restored. As the story slowly unravels, the viewer is taken on a journey into the minds of obsessed scientists, near death experiences and the power of energy not yet explained by science.

The OA received generally favorable critical reception with several reviewers drawing both favorable and unfavorable comparisons with Stranger Things. It does look and read familiar, but I personally loved both ideas and don’t think they are very similar. Both are very entertaining and thought provoking. Both have strong female lead characters with extraordinary powers and both address important parts of human development. (source)
