The best The Walking Dead characters were neglected in the woodwork for five episodes. Spend is the busiest – and most emotionally punching – episode since then, proving The Walking Dead should remember the rest of its crazy ensemble more often.

REVIEW AND RECAP OF THE WALKING DEAD SPEND:

Spoilers below. Continue to read this The Walking Dead ‘Spend’ review with that in mind.

The Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9/8c on AMC. You can watch previously aired episodes on AMC’s site.

Deanna may be Alexandria’s social leader, but her husband, Reg, is the quiet architect. Noah always interested me. He’s the only older teenage character, he is shown to be both tough and vulnerable, and he’s sincere. A young gentlemen. When he asks Reg to train him as his successor, Reg recognizes Noah’s value and gives him a journal to record everything. Noah became my new favorite character.

Last week a kid – Sam Anderson – caught Carol sneaking guns out of lockup. She threatened to get him eaten alive by zombies if he didn’t stay quiet. Oddly, Sam comes to Carol, insists on getting cookies, and tries to become friends. Eventually Carol realizes what’s going on. Sam wants a gun to protect his mother. Carol wants Sam’s father executed for his abuse, and the fact Rick didn’t immediately say no worries me. Punishment must fit crimes, or Alexandria will devolve into a reign of terror.

When a herd of walkers get the drop on the site where Abraham and the Alexandrians are gathering construction materials, Abraham single-handedly rescues a surrounded woman against orders. To the foreman’s credit, he owns up to his lousy leadership when reporting to Deanna. In fact, he recommends Abraham be made the new foreman. Deanna muses on how she is putting yet another survivor in an authority position.

Aidan leads Eugene, Noah, Glenn, Tara, and one other Alexandrian to retrieve supplies needed to repair Alexandria’s electricity grid. It turns out leaving endangered friends for dead is Alexandria policy. Aidan’s impulsiveness leads to his own death. Tara is injured. Everyone else is  pinned in a warehouse with zombies inside and out. Cowardly Eugene gets what is essentially a coming-of-age arc: he kills his first walker, extracts Tara, and distracts the zombies outside the warehouse. The Walking Dead always finds ingenious terrain predicaments. When trying to leave, Noah and the other Alexandrian get trapped in opposite sections of the revolving door. The Alexandrian panics and forces the door. His escape delivers Noah to the zombies inside the warehouse.

Gabriel becomes a nutcase because the writers want him to be and tells Deanna that all the other survivors are evil. Unfortunately, her son Aidan’s death might mean Deanna will listen to Gabriel while she is bereaved.
