The grid is color-coded for Prime Picks, Solid Selections, and Other Options. Just like how the daily Tonight on the Tube posts are organized. It’s best, second best and the rest that is still worth watching. Basically, if it has a color, I plan on watching it. So, I’m looking at potentially 11 hours of TV on Thursdays. But, since I watch most stuff either via DVR or OnDemand, it’s actually closer to eight hours.
A Few Notes on Thursday Nights
The Crazy Ones was pretty good and may have some potential. Unfortunately, the funniest thing in the “Pilot” episode was an outtake at the end. There is plenty of room for cameos like Kelly Clarkson given the premise, so that could be fun as well going forward.
The Michael J. Fox Show is one of my favorite new comedies of the fall. I’ve seen the first three, the first two of which play back-to-back on the night it premieres. It’s very good from the start, but really begins to round things out with the addition of some side characters like his newsroom rival played by Anne Heche (Men in Trees). I’m very much looking forward to more of this one.
The Millers isn’t as bad as you might think based on its early reviews. Also, it isn’t just all fart jokes. Yes, it’s not great, but the cast is really good and there is potential for a solid family comedy here. I’m going to give it a few episodes and see if one develops.
Once Upon a Time in Wonderland is one I looking forward to seeing more of, because I’ve only seen the 22 minute “Pilot Presentation” cut of the first episode. I liked what I saw, but need to see more to understand how they plan on extending this out into a multiple season series.
Parenthood is finally in the timeslot I thought it should have been in all along. Better late than never I guess. It’s just always seemed like the right type of show to cap off a night of comedy.
Reign is a 17th century Gossip Girl. It’s a historical drama with a modern day soundtrack. I may give it a couple more episodes, but it’s just not for me on an already crowded night.
Sean Saves the World is basically Sean Hayes playing a slightly toned down version of his Will & Grace character that is a father. As the main character though, it may be too much. If the show is allowed to develop some of the other characters at the office and his family then there may be some potential.
Welcome to the Family is another one that is not as bad as you may have heard from the early reviews. Yes, there is some racial humor, but unlike Dads there is a purpose to it other than the easy “joke.” The two dads in this series are set up to see the error of their ways and will have to grow together for the sake of their now intermingled family. I’m not saying that it’s great by any stretch, but there may be potential to develop a solid family comedy out of the premise, which is basically Reba with a few tweaks. I’m going to give it a few episodes and see if it does.
White Collar has been off my TV for too long. I am very much looking forward to it following Neal, Mozzie and Peter on some capers once again.
