HURON COUNTY — Friday (Sept. 13) was a busy day for Huron County Deputies.

At about 10 a.m., the Huron County Sheriff’s Department deputies arrested a Harbor Beach man for illegally selling Vicadon earlier in the spring, within the City of Harbor Beach.

This was the result of a combined investigation between our office and the Harbor Beach Police, which led to the arrest of Charles F. Smith, age 69 of Harbor Beach, explained sheriff Kelly Hanson.

Smith was arraigned in the 73-B District Court on a one count felony charge of delivery of vicadon. He was released after posting a $3,500.

Then, at about 10:56 a.m., Huron Central Dispatcher Christy Mularz received a 9-1-1 call from a driver reporting he was southbound at the M-53/M-142 intersection in Colfax Township and he wasn’t feeling well along with possibly having a heart attack.

“She told the driver to stop and put his four-way flashers on but soon lost communication with him. She could however hear him having difficulties through his open cell phone,” explained Hanson. “Deputy Steven Bismack and Bad Axe City Police Officer Scott Zaleski (who were nearby) responded and found that the victim’s car had crossed the northbound lanes of the 5-lane road and left the roadway.”

The vehicle continued to travel southbound hundreds of feet and eventually lightly came to rest against the Maple Lane Motel.

When officers removed the victim from his vehicle after finding no vital signs.

“Deputy Bismack got his A.E.D. and hooked it up, along with both starting C.P.R. After 2 A.E.D. activations (shocks), the 51-year-old male from Owendale began to show signs of life,” said Hanson. “Central Huron Ambulance then arrived and continued the life saving effort. He was transported to the Huron Medical Center and later flown out by helicopter to an out of the area hospital. As of this time, his condition is unknown.”
