It's the summer of renovations at the NorthRiver Yacht Club and Indian Hills Country Club golf courses.

Renovation for the NorthRiver Yacht Club, which celebrated its groundbreaking with the West Alabama Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, will include new Tifeagle Bermuda Greens, the removal of 40 bunkers and the resurfacing of cart paths.

Director of Golf Casey Smith said they hope to be finished with renovations by mid-September. NorthRiver Yacht Club's driving range, “Wee Links” practice course, teaching center and golf shop will remain open during renovation, which began on May 19.

“It should give us better playing conditions through the summer when we have all of our activity out here,” NorthRiver Yacht Club Golf Course Superintendent Matthew Devine said. “We'll have more consistent bunkers, and just overall playing conditions. Everything will be better for membership to be able to play golf all summer.”

Indian Hills Country Club Golf Course is resurfacing its putting greens, a process that Director of Golf Paul Reid said should take around three months.

“A lot of it has to do with Mother Nature, but we are looking into the Labor Day time frame,” Reid said.

Both clubs have set up options for its members to play at other golf courses, including ones nearby.

NorthRiver Yacht Club has set up a variety of agreements with roughly 15 different clubs, including Ol' Colony Golf Complex, Tuscaloosa Country Club and The Links. In addition, NorthRiver members have the option of playing on any of the 250-plus golf courses around the world that are owned by Troon, which acquired Honours Golf, last year.

“We've been getting people tee times at Camp Creek (Golf Club in Panama City) and Shark's Tooth (Lake Powell, Fla.). Our members have the ability to be able to go anywhere pretty much, because they have all of these companies world-wide with reciprocity,” NorthRiver Yacht Club General Manager Mike Ryan said.

Indian Hills Country Club has worked out deals with Ol' Colony Golf Complex, Tall Pines Golf Club at Woodland Forrest and Tuscaloosa Country Club for three-month temporary memberships.

“It's our pleasure to serve anyone that wants to play golf in Tuscaloosa County,” Ol' Colony Head Professional John Gray said.
