As the snow flies on the slick winter roads I can’t help but wait spring and the return of fast cars. The cars on this list are not only fast, but aesthetically appealing as well. Here is my list of the ten most bada** dream cars on my “must someday drive” list. Hey! I can dream. These cars changed the sportscar/supercar/racecar game beyond previous recognition.
10) 1978 “Smoky and the Bandit” Pontiac Trans Am
The iconic movie likely made the 1978 Pontiac Trans Am look faster than they are (as a previous owner). Still this car is an icon of a classic “outrun the law” car chase movie with Burt Reynolds and Sally Fields. And the “screaming chicken” logo on the hood amidst a burnout..classic.
9) Ferrari F40
A true beast of a Ferrari, racers consider it the incredible hulk. When hauling in this vintage Ferrari classic, don’t make the hulk angry..
8) 1992 McClaren F1
The McClaren F1 is a force to be reckoned with amongst all supercars, although the price tag is well..yikes. F1 racers say this car would be a top performer at the Le Mans race.
7) 1999 Dodge Viper
Chrysler’s version of a Shelby Cobra. Scary fast with over 500 horsepower right off the showroom floor these are now an American icon.
6) 1969 Mach 1 Mustang 428 Supra Cobra Jet
Take an already fast and rare 1969 Mach one and add a big block right off the factory floor. Well underrated in the factory claims of 355 horsepower (for insurance purposes) this rare Mustang hauls in a quarter mile race
5) 1966 Shelby Cobra
Like the Mach 1, this specialty racing reworked cobra with a Mustang engine rewrote the rules in the 60’s. And man do they look iconic cruising down the strip.
4) 2005 Lotus Elise
Tipping the scales at a gravity-defying 1950 lb., the diminutive Elise remains faithful to the Hethel company’s less-is-more school of vehicle production. Like the famous Seven and Elan, lightweight roadsters that helped put Lotus road cars on the map, the Elise is built around the same concept of joining an exceptionally light, nimble chassis to a flexible and responsive 4-cylinder engine. With so little mass to haul around, the Elise doesn’t need a ton of horsepower to go fast, huge brakes to slow down or massive wheels and tires to handle well.
3) 2017 Chevrolet Corvette Z06
The supercharged, 650-hp Corvette Z06 is today’s halo Corvette, and while it remains a performance bargain at $80,395, its suspension, tires, and brakes are the critical components for track duty. Chevrolet hasn’t yet said how much the Grand Sport will cost, but we expect that, like the previous-generation model, it will cost only a few thousand bucks more than a standard Corvette Stingray. For those jonesing for a track weapon on a budget, that makes the Grand Sport the ultimate toy
2) 2017 Ford GT
Benchmark, legend, step-off point for a thousand stories. The result of taking a sports car that beat everybody and doubling the power, but also the embodiment of American car culture: crazy ambition plus screw-you attitude and a heaping dose of louder-faster-better. Still the standard by which all supercars are judged.
1) 2914 Bugatti Veyron
1,200 hp, a maximum torque of 1,500 Nm, acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.5 seconds and a top speed of 415 km/h – these were the performance specs that amazed and inspired experts and car fans throughout the world when this supercar was launched in 2010. But that was not all. The same year, the Super Sport fulfilled the strict requirements of Guinness World Records and set a new world speed record for road cars of 431.072 km/h. Despite numerous attempts to dethrone the Super Sport from its status as the fastest production supercar, the Bugatti remains unbeaten to this day.
