Jason Derulo is gearing up for his New Year’s Eve performance, but he has even bigger plans in the works for 2017: a new album.

“The energy of New Orleans is unparalleled,” Derulo tells Billboard in an email, speaking of his Allstate Fan Fest performance, airing on ABC’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve special Saturday night (Dec. 31). “I’m looking forward to bringing in the new year with a Mardi Gras styled BANG! Beads, alcohol and all out celebration.”

But fans will be anticipating the new year, which the singer says has a “brand-new album on the horizon.”

“I’ve been recording at my house this time. And it’s just been a much more comfortable experience. And I’m excited to share with you all my ups, my downs, my highs and my lows. Also got to work with a lot of amazing artists. 2017 is ours, Derulo Family,” he says.

Derulo tells Billboard he also hopes to spend more time with his family and enjoy his life to the fullest in 2017. “Life is short, so I want to experience as much as I can before my day and share those moments with the people I love.” In addition, he says he looks forward to “a fresh start” in the new year. “So much negativity in the world in 2016. We can start fresh putting love first. We can’t let our nation be run by racism, greed and abhorrence.”

As for the year past, highlights include making new music (“I’m proud to announce my new joint features Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla. Top of the year!”); launching his men’s apparel and shoe line, LVL XIII, at New York Fashion Week; being recognized on the Forbes 30 under 30 list; judging on So You Think You Can Dance — and enjoying new tunes from others, including Drake’s Views album and Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling.” Looking forward, he names Phoebe Ryan as the “one to watch.”
