Tune Collective - Defining Music & Culture

When Adele returned on November 20, 2015 with 25, her third album and first in nearly five years, the pop music world ravenously devoured one of the most eagerly anticipated full-length releases in recent memory. After conquering Top 40 radio, hundreds of arenas and multiple award shows with 2011’s 21, Adele had returned with another commercial blockbuster just in time for the holidays, and its record-breaking launch dominated pop culture conversation at the end of 2015.

One year later, just how big is Adele’s 25? Let’s check in on the album’s enormous success with five key numbers that reflect Adele’s unbeatable star power:

9.1 Million: Current U.S. sales of 25, according to Nielsen Music. That number includes the 3.38 million sold in its opening week last November, which marked the biggest single sales week for an album since Nielsen began tracking in 1991. Currently, 25 is less than a million copies away from going diamond (10 million albums sold), and less than 3 million copies away from surpassing Adele’s mega-selling predecessor, 21 (current sales: 11.7 million).

10: Nonconsecutive weeks spent at No. 1 by 25 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. Upon its November 2015 release, 25 ruled the albums chart for seven straight frames, eventually giving way to David Bowie’s Blackstar in January. Adele has spent the second-most weeks atop the Billboard 200 chart in 2016, behind Drake, whose Views has enjoyed 13 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1.

4.75 Million: Current downloads of “Hello,” 25′s lead single, according to Nielsen Music. Upon its release, “Hello” became one of Adele’s biggest hits ever, with a No. 1 debut on the Hot 100 chart in October 2015 and 10 weeks in the top spot. Since then, Adele has notched two more Top 20 hits from 25: “Send My Love (To Your New Lover),” which has peaked at No. 8 on the Hot 100 chart, and “When We Were Young,” which made it to No. 14.

1.7 Billion: YouTube views of Adele’s “Hello” music video. The cinematic six-minute clip has become one of the most viewed videos in the platform’s history (for context, it’s surpassed Justin Bieber’s “Baby” video, which has 1.4 billion views, although PSY’s “Gangnam Style” still rules with 2.6 billion views). “Hello” is also Adele’s second video with over a billion views, along with 2011’s “Rolling in the Deep” (just over 1 billion to date).

$159.3 Million: Total gross from 102 shows on Adele’s 2016 tour, per Billboard Boxscore. Adele’s international trek has included multi-night runs at major arenas, and every single one of the shows reported to Boxscore has been sold out, with an attendance of 1,474,323 for those performances. Millions of people have wanted to hear 25 live, and Adele has spent much of the album’s first year as the most sought-after live performer on the planet.
