[ Fri Jan 31 2014 10:44:36 EST) ] Tom Malone: This is one of few times in history we’ve seen a pattern of a one-month low followed by a rally day on greatly reduced volume…twice in a row. The only precedents were 4/5/94 and 3/19/01, both of which saw further selling over the next two weeks. If we look for just a bit lower volume on the up days, there were 9 occurrences, and every one of them saw more selling over the next two weeks. The good news is that 5 of them saw the selling mostly cease after those two weeks. Risk should rise if we see another 1-3 days of a rally attempt.
[ Fri Jan 31 2014 10:44:43 EST) ] Angela D: LONG SPXU instead

[ Fri Jan 31 2014 11:26:12 EST) ] Tom Malone: Available cash among investors sunk to an all-time low in December, exceeding the extreme seen in February 2000. As a percentage of market cap, it is now -0.67%, a bit less than the February 2000 extreme. Looking at year-over-year growth in debt versus year-over-year growth in stocks, however, we’re still far below previous extremes, at 5% versus the 72% seen in 2000 and 50% seen in 2007.
[ Fri Jan 31 2014 11:26:55 EST) ] Tom Malone: This is likely not actionable, but something notable about today’s activity is that it was only the 3rd time we’ve seen the S&P 500 drop more than -1% and gold rally more than +1% on a day the FOMC updated its guidance on interest rates. The other two were in the midst of bear market panics, September 24, 2002 and October 29, 2008.
[ Fri Jan 31 2014 11:28:24 EST) ] Tom Malone: AFTER FED  : Two weeks later, the S&P was down more often than not, but a month later it had rallied 7 out of 10 times. It wasn’t anything dramatic, but it is confirmation that traders have short memories.
The last three occurrences, all since the 2009 bottom, saw more selling pressure during the next two weeks, but then hearty rallies.
[ Fri Jan 31 2014 11:29:22 EST) ] Tom Malone: So we seem to have concensus from the facts that the next couple of weeks will be choppy and possibly lower as Doubt comes to takeover
[ Fri Jan 31 2014 11:29:57 EST) ] Tom Malone: but make no mistake this is NOT a bear or anything more than our 1st true int term correction in a while
[ Fri Jan 31 2014 11:30:14 EST) ] Tom Malone: so hold tight and buy the dips into the next rally
[ Fri Jan 31 2014 11:32:53 EST) ] Tom Malone: Much of what we’ve looked at suggested another bout of selling pressure, potentially after a rally back toward 1820ish on the S&P. Sellers didn’t wait that long, as the futures only got to 1801 before that pressure took hold. We’re right back near support at 1770, a break of which has a high likelihood of generating some panic-level readings (in the short-term). Unless that happens, there is a modest bullish setup since we’re “oversold on support.” That is predicated, again, on that 1770 area holding.

[ Fri Jan 31 2014 12:24:29 EST) ] Tom Malone: Like gold, bonds have been doing well price-wise. TLT has put in classic bottoming behavior, which was doubly positive because of what had been excessive pessimism among investors.
That has now changed a bit. Price behavior remains good, but sentiment has pushed out of pessimistic territory. It’s still somewhat depressed, but that leg of the bullish argument is no longer as valid.
[ Fri Jan 31 2014 12:24:33 EST) ] Angela D: Another VIX SPY buy signal. Nice call TOm, on upside next week.
[ Fri Jan 31 2014 12:24:54 EST) ] Tom Malone: TY I Hope !!!!
[ Fri Jan 31 2014 12:25:00 EST) ] Tom Malone:  The unrelenting downtrend in commodities remains uninterrupted, and DBC has lost what had been potential support near $25. Its rebound attempt lately has been lame.
With a clear pattern of lower highs, lower lows and broken support levels, we would have to see truly pessimistic sentiment in order to be more willing to anticipate some kind of bounce. But the commodity score is only in the mid-40% area, which is low but not extreme.
