[ Fri Jan 17 2014 14:29:38 EST ] Tom Malone: There has been only one other time since at least 1997 that the Nasdaq Composite closed at a 52-week high the same day Intel reported earnings, and the stock then gapped down at least -3% the next morning, as it is indicated to do as of the time of this writing. That date was 7/18/07, after which the Composite lost more than -10% within the next 30 days. If the Composite had set a 52-week high sometime during the past week, then there were 7 instances. Over the next 30 days, the Composite rallied only one time (October 1999) and it declined an average of -5.6% at its worst point versus a gain of +1.3% at its best point (from the day Intel reported).
[ Fri Jan 17 2014 14:31:10 EST ] sharon stelzl: that suggests bearish?
[ Fri Jan 17 2014 14:31:50 EST ] Tom Malone: According to Bloomberg, there were 345 stocks in the S&P 500 that closed above their 50-day average on Wednesday. There were 395 that closed above their 200-day average. That gives us percentages of 69% and 79%, respectively.
With the S&P 500 index hitting a new 52-week high on Wednesday, by definition the index itself is trading above both its 50-day and 200-day averages, so we’re seeing something of a divergence between the index and its components.
The furthest back we have this data is 1990, so let’s go back and look for every time the S&P closed at a 52-week high, but fewer than 70% of its components closed above their 50-day average and fewer than 80% closed above their 200-day average. The results are on page 3.
[ Fri Jan 17 2014 14:32:12 EST ] Tom Malone: There were a total of 88 trading days that met these conditions, which were winnowed down to the 24 in
the table by skipping over consecutive days, to reduce the redundancy of returns.
Stocks out-performed a bit in the short-term, with only a few dates marking an exact peak. The trouble came in the weeks ahead, as the S&P under- performed markedly over the next month. It was positive 42% of the time, compared to an at-any-time probability of 62%.
After that, returns improved. They were still less than random returns during the study period, but weren’t especially bad.
None of these instances had a Dumb Money Confidence level as high as it is now, meaning we have very high confidence in spite of a good number of stocks not feeling as much love as the indexes.
[ Fri Jan 17 2014 14:32:31 EST ] Tom Malone: Components Struggling To Keep Up With The Group
[ Fri Jan 17 2014 14:32:34 EST ] Tom Malone: Bearish
[ Fri Jan 17 2014 14:33:08 EST ] Tom Malone: Traders in the VIX “fear gauge” have greatly increased their number of option bets on higher volatility relative to their bets on a decrease. Every other time that’s happened to this degree, the VIX jumped over the next 3-6 months.
[ Fri Jan 17 2014 14:34:01 EST ] Tom Malone: Options Speculation Index that the vast majority of the trades have been favoring bullish strategies – either buying call options or selling put options. That’s been the case since November. An 8-week average of that index just exceeded the peak it reached in early 2011 and is now the highest since April 2000.

A more widely-followed measure of options activity is the Total Put/Call Ratio from the Chicago Board Options Exchange. The past two weeks have seen a big move in that measure, telling us that traders have greatly favored trading call options versus put options.

Put/call ratios can trend along with the market, though, so using absolute levels can get tricky. We use moving average envelopes on the site to help determine extremes. Another method is to compare one average to another, which is what is reflected in the chart above.

The chart shows the amount that the 10-day average of the put/call ratio is away from the 200-day average. When the 10-day moves 20% or more from the 200-day, it indicates extremes in sentiment.

Currently, the 10-day average is more than 21% below the 200-day average, one of the most extreme moves in the past decade.

The other times the averages have become this distended are highlighted on the chart with red triangles. When the averages got *almost* this extreme, the triangles are shown as hollow.

For the most part, these line up with many of the other extremes we’ve touched on in the past few weeks. The big exception was in late 2008 as mentioned above. Other than that, all the extremes led to a market that either corrected quickly after the extreme was hit, or had further gains wiped away during a subsequent correction. This is further confirmation of a higher-risk intermediate-term (1-3 month) outlook.
