With inspirations ranging from The Beach Boys to Gwen Stefani and totally relatable songs about wishing that guy was your boyfriend, it’s not surprising we’ve been obsessed with Best Coast from day one. Now, they’re four albums down and currently touring their latest instalment California Nights. We grabbed lead singer Bethany Cosentino before their London show to talk on stage style, Stevie Nicks and being an inspirational front woman.

How’s tour life going?

I miss my cat and my boyfriend but it’s great! It’s so cool to be so far away from home and have people supporting you every night. I love coming to England because I love shopping here, I always go to Topshop even though we have it in America.

What’s your favourite thing to wear on stage?

I’ve been experimenting more and taking risks with things that I wouldn’t have worn a few years ago. I like to wear sheer tights with a mini skirt – recently we played the Hollywood Bowl and I wore high-waisted pants under a laser-cut leather skirt, it essentially felt like wearing underwear on stage, but it looked cool!

Who would you say are the ultimate front women?
I just love women that are powerful, who come out and are insanely confident. I love Stevie Nicks, she’s always been my favourite. Then Hayley Williams from Paramore, just watching her peform is so awesome, she’s so little but has this huge voice and is always running around.

What do you love about being a front woman?
A lot of my fans are young girls. I’ve had them say things like “You inspired me to want to play the guitar”, or “You gave me the confidence to wear something different”. I was inspired by so many front women when I was a teenage girl so it’s cool to know that there’s girls out there in the crowd that feel the way that I did, but about me.

What music inspires you?
It can be anything from Oasis and The Misfits, to super poppy things like Gwen Stefani -we just go all over the place. I was really into pop punk bands growing up, like Blink 182 and Rilo Kiley were my favourite band of all time, and then stuff like Fleetwood Mac. My music taste has always been insanely varied!

California Nights is out now.
