Ha Noi – Ho Chi Minh City straight air route to be decided this month

The Ministry of Transport (MoT) this month will decide whether a straight air route linking Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city over the Lao and Cambodian airspaces will be operated or not, Deputy Minister Nguyen Hong Truong has said. At a press briefing on the ministry's Q3 plan in Hanoi on October 7, Truong said flight simulator (SIM) tests conducted by the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) and VietJet Air showed that the proposed new route is 86km shorter than the current one, saving five minutes of flying time and 190kg of fuel. The results were also verified by experts from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Thailand and Vietnam, he said. Being aware of the potential of the route, dubbed "golden air route", the ministry has set up a team for further research of the project, said Truong. Two Vietnamese air carriers were asked on Thursday to use flight simulator systems to begin test flights between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City on a controversial straight air route proposed by a retired pilot that crosses the airspace of Laos and Cambodia. National flag carrier Vietnam Airlines and no-frills airline VietJet Air were requested to cooperate with the Flight Moderation Office to develop the flight simulation plans for the new flying path, dubbed the "golden air route" by its proposer, according to a document signed by the chief of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam. The project was conceived in 1983 by former military pilot Mai Trong Tuan who said a new, straight air route along the 106th meridian east would cut the flying distance and flight times between Hanoi and HCMC. This "Golden Air Route" would save a great deal of money, Tuan said. Scientists and members of Vietnam's civil aviation body clashed over the issue of cost during a debate on the proposed Hanoi-Ho Chi Minh City air route on December 6 in Hanoi. Chairman of the Vietnam Economics Association (VEA) Prof. Tran Phuong said the discussion aimed to clarify the economic efficiency of operating a straight flight path between the two cities, dubbed the "Golden Route." The contentious Hanoi-Ho Chi Minh City air route proposed along the 106th meridian east should be rejected by the government, said the Ministry of Transport. In an official statement November 30 to Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, Transport Deputy Minister Pham Quy Tieu said the new route would not be feasible. The plan to fly aircraft in a straight line between Hanoi and HCM City over neighboring Cambodia and Laos, known as the Golden Route, could not be carried out because of national security issues and economic inefficiency, the statement said. For the project to go ahead, airlines would have to pay fees to the neighboring countries for use of their airspace in addition to other international flight charges.
