A fascinating new website called Neighborhood Scout has analyzed every neighborhood in America, using US Census data, to give us a list of the most dangerous neighborhoods in America.

The list of the 25 most dangerous neighborhoods in America was based on the number of violent crimes per 1,000 neighborhood residents. The violent crimes included in this research are from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reports: homicide, rape, armed robbery, and aggravated assault.

The site says a “neighborhood” is defined by the official government designation for neighborhood – the census tract. Census tracts usually have 4,000 persons, but can range between 1,500 and 8,000 persons. In urban areas, they are small, and in rural areas they can cover an entire small town or even a few small towns in very rural areas.

Here are the 25 worst neighborhoods in the United States, showing:

Congratulations, Baltimore! America’s most dangerous neighborhood is within your city limits. Can you imagine having a 1 in 11 chance of being a victim of a violent crime, every single year, in your own neighborhood?

You may be shocked to see a dangerous neighborhood in a city like Houston (#2), a very conservative area. But as the analysts from Neighborhood Scout concede, even great cities often have a few terrible neighborhoods within their borders.

The creators of the Neighborhood Scout website define themselves as “data geeks” who “build the best location-based technologies possible to empower businesses to make informed decisions that translate to increased revenue and reduced costs.”

Are any of these neighborhoods near you? Do you think this is a fair list? Share your thoughts in the comments section.
