At our international headquarters office in Atlanta, our award-winning communications team is looking for an experienced, passionate, savvy Director of Public and Media Relations to generate positive awareness of Habitat for Humanity’s work and draw attention to the need to address affordable housing issues. This impactful role oversees the public and media relations team and develops and executes strategic public relations campaigns and media activities, with a primary focus on national media. The successful candidate must be able to effectively counsel all levels of staff, manage multiple projects and have proven success in crisis communications management.

Key responsibilities include:
Serve as a key spokesperson for Habitat for Humanity International in official response to media inquiries.

Lead public relations staff and motivate team to new levels of excellence.

Oversee all aspects of media relations, including creating news releases and alerts; cultivating ongoing and special-events coverage; responding to incoming media requests and inquiries; securing placement of op-eds; conducting proactive media outreach; tracking media results; and providing media training for the organization’s spokespeople.

Provide public relations and crisis communications counsel across the organization.

Collaborate with others on the communications team on integrated communications campaigns and programs.

Support and work collaboratively with our international offices to broaden and strengthen Habitat’s story.

Manage general operations of the public and media relations department, including budget development and oversight, hiring and training.

Foster a collaborative work environment within the public relations department, the communications team and the broader organization.

Travel up to 20% to domestic and international locations, as needed. Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree.

10+ years of professional experience developing and implementing successful strategic public relations campaigns and initiatives at a national level.

Outstanding written and oral communications skills, with mastery of AP style and ability to develop and deliver effective presentations.

Strong knowledge of U.S. media, with proven track record of placements in top national news media.

Experience with providing effective counsel to all levels of staff on critical public relations issues.

Budget and personnel management experience, including strong leadership skills.

Proven experience in project management and event planning.

Thorough knowledge of current and emerging public relations issues and trends, preferably in the nonprofit sector.

Experience with nonprofit/philanthropic sector a plus.
