Working in the Australian Border Force

The Australian Border Force (ABF) is the operational arm of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection. Our mission is to protect Australia’s border and manage the movement of people and goods across it. The ABF contributes to three national outcomes including strong national security, a strong economy and a prosperous and cohesive society.

We have significant service and enforcement functions, including:

Facilitating the lawful passage of people and goods

Investigations, compliance and enforcement in relation to prohibited goods and immigration malpractice; and

Onshore detention, removals and support to regional processing arrangements.

The Australian Border Force Marine Unit (Marine Unit)

The Marine Unit plays a significant role in border security by maintaining an armed presence around Australia’s coastline and responding to reported or suspected border incidents and illegal activity. This significant capability aids in the maintenance of Australia’s national security and protecting the continuity of the Australian lifestyle.

Australian Border Force Cutters (ABFCs) perform strategic patrols and tactical support for various agencies within and beyond Australia’s 200 nautical mile exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

Australian Border Force vessels may be used to:
counter people, drug and weapons smuggling

apprehend foreign fishing vessels

gather information and intelligence

monitor environmental pollution

assist park management of offshore nature reserves and marine parks; and

assist search and rescue efforts.

There may be opportunities that we can offer on a temporary and/or casual basis in the Marine Unit to meet short term operating pressures. If you have a maritime or enforcement background (and mandatory qualifications), are able to work at sea for lengthy periods of time, be part of a small team in a wide range of environmental conditions, enjoy a challenging workplace environment where duties are varied, can deal with conflict situations and are comfortable wearing a uniform, then working as a Marine Reservist may be for you.
