In my newest book, Where Treetops Glisten, my main character Meredith (Merry) is a battlefield nurse during World War II. It’s hard for Merry to be away from home, and receiving letters and packages from her family means a lot. It also means a lot for soldiers serving today.

How it started
It was March 26th, 2003. Army Sergeant Brian Horn, one of 1,000 soldiers, parachuted into enemy territory in Northern Iraq.
Five months later, Brian Horn was able to call his parents. They had been sending their son an average of six care packages per week. So when Brian asked his parents to send more, “my wife and I thought he was kidding!” Marty Horn told me. “But Brian said, ‘no — it’s for the soldiers that don’t get any.’
What you do
You select one or more Soldiers from the Where to Send page. You will notice the Soldier’s address includes the line, “ATTN: Any Soldier®” . The Soldiers are volunteers for this effort, they will see the “Attn” line, and will put your letters and packages into the hands of Soldiers who don’t get much or any mail. This effort is 100% voluntary.

Most soldiers will share care packages with their buddies. Seven years ago I searched for the name “Ian” (that was my son’s name and he had passed away the previous year) I was given the address for a Marine. I sent him a care package and a short letter about my son. Well, Marine Ian and our family have been friends ever since. He carried my son’s picture under his arm band throughout his tour of duty. We were even invited to his wedding. I have even met his mom on Facebook
