ORLANDO, FL—(Marketwired – April 26, 2016) – Two Orlando family dentists recently became sleep certified doctors after completing a three–day, hands–on course with a leading sleep apnea dentist and trainer.

Drs. Jessica and Thomas Overmeyer of Overmeyer Family Dental recently trained with Dr. Jonathan Greenburg, a California dentist who treats snoring and sleep apnea issues with his own Zyppah oral appliance. Both doctors are now offering sleep tests and reliable solutions for sleep and snoring problems. If left untreated, sleep apnea can potentially be life–threatening. “This will benefit our patients greatly because sleep apnea is the cause of many medical problems such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, memory problems, daytime tiredness, heart attacks and strokes,” Dr. Thomas Overmeyer said. “Treatment can help patients lose weight, become more productive during the day and improve their mood and overall health.”

Drs. Overmeyer can identify the warning signs of sleep apnea and then have the patient undergo a home sleep test. If the sleep apnea test is positive, the team can craft a comfortable oral appliance.

The oral appliance has become an alternative to a CPAP machine for treating sleep apnea. The compliance of CPAP machines is about 50 percent, and many patients find the machine and mask uncomfortable and cumbersome, which disrupts their sleep. The oral appliance repositions the lower jaw forward and prevents the tongue from blocking the airway. In some cases, Drs. Overmeyer will use the oral appliance in conjunction with an APAP machine, which is smaller and more tolerable than traditional CPAP machines.

Dr. Thomas Overmeyer said not many dental offices in the Orlando area focus on sleep apnea treatment. He anticipates an increase in sleep apnea cases as the United States population continues to age and struggle with weight problems. Being overweight and larger neck sizes are both big risk factors of sleep apnea.

“Soon we are going to have an epidemic of sleep apnea cases, and very few doctors are treating it,” Dr. Thomas Overmeyer said. “As dentists, we are dedicated to giving our patients easier access to sleep apnea testing and sleep apnea solutions.”

Overmeyer Family Dental, 3221 S. Conway Road, Ste. C, provides preventive dentistry, affordable cosmetic dentistry and restorative dentistry for patients 3 years old to 103 years old. Dr. Thomas Overmeyer was born in Fort Wayne, Ind., and graduated high school in Ohio in 1974. In 1977, he graduated cum laude from The Ohio State University, receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in microbiology in just three years. He then graduated from The Ohio State University School of Dentistry in 1980 and attended a general practice residency program at the Medical College of Ohio at Toledo. After dental school and his residency program, Dr. Thomas Overmeyer moved to Florida and spent seven months as a dental associate before buying his own practice. Dr. Thomas Overmeyer has advanced training in mini and standard implants, Six Month Smiles, Invisalign and LANAP laser gum treatment.

Dr. Jessica Overmeyer, a Florida native, received her Bachelor of Science degree in biology from the University of Florida, where she also minored in business and Spanish. She also attended The Ohio State University School of Dentistry, graduating in 2014. Dr. Jessica Overmeyer holds certifications in mini dental implants, Invisalign and Six Month Smiles.

Dr. Thomas Overmeyer bought the Orlando dental office that is now Overmeyer Family Dental in June 1982. Overmeyer Family Dental moved to a new office building in February 1984. The 1,500–square–foot facility was recently remodeled and includes six treatment rooms and state–of–the–art dental equipment. Dr. Thomas Overmeyer uses the PerioLase laser to treat periodontal disease, a method he has found to be more effective than traditional gum surgery. He also uses digital X–rays to diagnose and educate patients about oral health issues.
