As we move away from unnecessary hair typing, the most important hair typing system should relate to how porous your hair is and the texture of the strands themselves. Meaning do you have highly porous hair or low porosity hair. Are your strands thin/fine or thick/course. We recently discussed the oils that should be used on low porosity hair, so it is only right that we dive into the world of women with high porosity natural hair. The management and hair care regimen needed for high porosity natural hair can be difficult to understand at first but once it is mastered you will have amazing results. Here’s why!

What is high porosity?

High Porosity hair means the cuticles of your hair are raised highly therefore they absorb moisture rather quickly. And while that may sound like an amazing beneficial thing… there are a few issues with highly porous hair that drive naturals nuts. Your raised cuticle never closes so just as quickly as you absorb the moisture, you lose it as well. This causes dry hair which is more susceptible to damage and breaking. The raised strands also catch onto each other easily which means it is easier for your hair to become tangled.  Not only does detangling become a hassle, highly porous natural hair also becomes frizzy very easily. For some frizziness is the death of a hair style while others embrace it. Depending on your view on it this could be an extremely annoying factor of having high porosity natural hair.

In taking care of high porosity natural hair your hair care regimen will have to be specific for your hair’s needs. What you will want to look for specifically in products for your highly porous natural hair are products that are moisturizing and water based. You will want heavier products like custards, puddings…etc to help saturate the hair as well as heavy oils to smooth out the cuticle and seal in the moisture for as long as possible.
