As we constantly change the conversation and discuss the positivity and beauty that comes along with having type 4 hair we also must discuss what works best and most effectively to ensure that type four hair is always thriving. Type four hair isn’t diffiuclt… as most people believe. Instead of labeling it as such its crucial to discuss what type four hair needs the most and where you can find those needs in particular products. So what does type four hair need to be great?
MOISTURE! It’s as simple and complex as that. Type four hair often gets a bad rap for not being “shiny enough” or “always being dry”. But that’s certainly not the case! Type four hair is extra coily therefore needs a little extra TLC when it comes to the moisturizing department. Coily hair requires a careful balance of moisture in protein because it is more susceptible to breakage than other hair types. Most importantly you should always follow the LOC method when taking care of your type four hair in order to ensure that you are sealing in the moisture you are applying.
So we are going to discuss the best moisturizing products you can use throughout your hair regimen to make sure you are getting the right amount of moisture and sealing it in properly.
Best Hair Products For Type Four Hair
Pre-Poo
The pre-poo step is crucial for your wash day to run smoothly and to be “less difficult” so to speak. Pre-pooing softens the hair before you tackle it with the detangling, shampooing and conditioning steps of your wash day routine. With type four hair there are other variants in how your hair is strucutred as well. You may have low or or high porous hair as well as thick/course or thin/ fine strands. That is a conversation for another post but there is an oil/pre poo treatment that is right for you.
For fine/thin strands or low porous hair, I recommend a lighter prepoo treatment that consists of lighter oils such as jojoba or grapeseed oil. For thicker courser hair I recommend Babassu Oil, Coconut oil, or Jamaican Black Castor Oil (JBCO). Any of the oil treatments you choose I also suggest adding avocado oil or an actual avocado in the mix to aid in moisturizing before you detangle or shampoo.
