Can we capture the entire world in 3D? This is what the Occipital’s Structure sensor is doing with computer vision. The device uses the iPad as a mobile 3-D scanner to model real world objects in 3D that can be 3-D printed later.
Its Kickstarer campaign was widely successful. At $349, the Structure is a stereoscopic scanner with paired infrared LEDs that capture light invisible to the human eye to form a 3-D model. It connects to the iPad via USB and it is encased in an anodized aluminum case with an included battery that lasts for 4 hours. Structure provides developers with a software development kit (SDK) to create applications- anything from games to augmented reality software. The drivers and CAD specs are open source and work for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, and Android.
