Yellowstone és el primer parc nacional que va existir als EEUU I el nom li ve pel color daurat de la roca que forma el congost del seu riu principal. S'estén pels estats de Wyoming , Montana i Idaho.
Yellowstone és únic pels seus guèisers, aigües termals, piscines de fang i fumaroles i és la major concentració de fenòmens geotèrmics del món. El parc es troba sobre la caldera d'un volcà actiu que segueix emitint vapor i vents. És impressionant com es pot estar tan a prop dels guèisers i dins del cràter d’un volcà actiu! Fem una caminada per la Fountain Paint Pot plena de piscines de fang bullent i de colors a causa dels minerals i de les bactèries. Des d’allà, si et gires, es veuen 6-10 guèisers fumejant al mateix temps. És preciós tot i la pudor de sofre.
Aquí no estem de sort amb el temps. Comença a ploure i es preveu neu per als propers dies. Ens diuen que normalment, en aquest període de l’any no fa tan fred. Però, què hi farem. Com que portem la casa a sobre, doncs, conduïm una mica i, quan deixa de ploure, sortim i caminem i admirem la bellesa dels rius en zig zag que recorren els prats salvatges i els salts d’aigua.
A en John li encanta aquest lloc i és per això que ens volia portar aquí i ensenyar-nos aquesta bellesa natural. Ell tenia 16 anys la primera vegada que va venir a pescar a Yellowstone amb els seus amics, just després de treure’s el carnet de conduir. Diu que és un dels llocs més bonics per pescar: L'aigua és tan clara i els rius tan salvatges. Pots estar pescant mentre se t’acosta un buffalo. Natura en estat pur .
Veiem grups de buffalos des del cotxe i també quan estem caminant per veure la zona llac Firehole Drive , una de les àrees que té més guèisers : El Great Fountain i el White Dome que té un enorme xemeneia. Aquí també, et gires i veus vapor en totes direccions. (Mentre caminàvem jo m’anava girant per veure si algun animal estava massa a prop nostre). Un dels nostres preferits va ser la Surprise Pool, una piscineta amb aigua de color turquesa transparent on s’hi acumula gas fins que no ho pot suportar més i llavors apareix una bombolla a la superfície amb un so de bombolles increïble. Realment es pot sentir la força del centre de la Terra .
Sabíeu que Yellowstone té uns 1.000 terratrèmols a l'any ?
La piscina més colorida de Yellowstone és la Grand Prismatic Spring , piscina en forma de cor amb les aigües color turquesa que fuma moltíssim i amb el vent que fa ens envia perfums sulfurosos. Li dic a l’Elena que va molt bé pel cutis i així no es queixa. Ja ja
Assistim a una xerrada sobre Llops que han estat reintroduïts al parc el 1995. Després, anant cap a "casa" em va semblar veure’n un però les nenes em van dir que era un coyote! No sé, no sé. Al parc també hi ha l’ós bru i el terrible ós grizzly , però no en aquesta zona , espero. En fer el programa de Junior Rangers , L’Elena i l’Ariana aprenen a reconèixer les petjades dels elk, buffalos, coyotes, llops, ossos etc. L’Elena descobreix que té el peu més gran que el d’un ós bru i el peu de l'Ariana és més gran que el d’un ós bru .
Veiem els àlbers amb el tronc tan blanc i amb les fulles ja grogues, i els boscos de pins renascut després d’un gran incendi als anys 80. Ens assabentem de la importància que el foc té per regenerar els boscos d’aquests pins.
Des de l'Oficina d'Informació del parc, admirem el més famós i més predictible de tots els guèisers de Yellowstone : l'Old Faithful . Entra en erupció cada 90 minuts durant uns 5 minuts i atreu el major nombre de turistes: avui en veiem principalment de xinesos.
Com que cada vegada feia més fred, ens vam decidir d’anar a escalfar-nos a la cafeteria de l’històric hotel Old Faithful Inn construït el 1904. L'interior està fet amb troncs d'arbres, és impressionantment alt i es poden veure els troncs de totes les formes que aguanten l’edifici. Molt curiós també de veure les llars de foc de pedra, amb foc pels 4 costats. Té un ambient decadent que resulta agradable i convida a llegir, jugar a les cartes, converses tranquil - les i mirar el paisatge i el guèiser en erupció.
En John se sent decebut pel temps que fa. Tota la seva idea de venir a l'oest era perquè poguéssim gaudir de les meravelles naturals del parc, muntar a cavall , pescar, ensenyar-nos on ell havia agafat les truites més grans, fer excursions i veure salts d’aigua. Però amb aquest fred, tot està limitat. Però de totes maneres ens ho passem bé.
Com que ens estem en un bon càmping, quan arribem “a casa” podem connectar-nos a l’aigua, a l’electricitat i tenir calefacció. La nit passada vàrem haver de desconnectar la mànega d’aigua per evitar que es congelés. Durant el dia, per no tenir fred, el secret són els sostres de roba. En portem entre i 4 i 6. O sigui, que si ens veieu grassos a les fotos, és perquè portem gairebé tota la roba que tenim. Poc elegant però s’està calentó.
The first US National Park, Yellowstone, took its name from the gold cliffs forming the canyon of the main river. It spreads over the states of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho.
Yellowstone is unique for its geysers, hot springs, mud pools and fumaroles and it is the largest concentration of geothermal features in the world. The park sits on a 30 by 40 mile caldera of an active volcano that continues to steam and vent.. It is impressive how you can get so close to the geysers and volcanic formations. We walked on the Fountain Paint Pot grail full of boiling mudpots and fumaroles and from there, if you turn around, you can see 6-10 geysers steaming at the same time. We love it and we learn to live with the sulfur smell. Yuck.
We are not lucky with the weather here. It is starting to rain and snow is forecasted for the coming days. We are at high altitude but they tell us that it is unusually cold. But, we will make the most out of it. Since we have our house with us, we drive a bit and, when it stops raining, we get out and hike, admire the beauty of the wild rivers and waterfalls.
John LOVES this place and this is why he really wanted to bring us here and enjoy nature’s beauty in the park. He was 16 the first time he came with his friends on a fishing trip. It was right after he got his drivers license and, they chose one of the best places on Earth to fish. The water is so clear and the rivers so wild! You can be fishing in the river while buffalos come close to you. Nature at its best.
We see groups of buffalos from the car but also while we are walking on the Firehole Lake Drive, one of the areas that has more geysers: the Great Fountain and the White Dome, with an enormous cone. Again, you turn around and see steam in all directions. (I was also turning around to see if any animal was too close to us). One of our favorites is the Surprise Pool with turquoise water that accumulates gas until it can’t hold it and then it brings up a bubble to the surface with an amazing bubbling sound. You can really feel the forces of the center of the Earth.
Did you know that Yellowstone has some 1000 earthquakes per year?
The most colorful pool in Yellowstone is the Grand Prismatic Spring, a heart shaped pool with turquoise waters and colorful edges that, because of the wind, sends you the sulfured perfumes: I told Elena this is really good for the skin so she does not complain. LOL
We attended a talk about wolfs which have been reintroduced in the park in 1995 and I pretended that I saw one at night but the girls told me it was a coyote! The park has black bears and the terrible grizzly bear, but not in this area, I hope. By doing the Junior Ranger program, Elena and Ariana can now read tracks of elk, moose, buffalo, coyote, wolf, bear etc. Elena has bigger foot than a grizzly and Ariana’s foot bigger than a black bear.
We see the aspen trees with bright white trunk now changing leaves, some of them totally yellow and the forests of pine trees reborn after the big fire in the 80s. We learn how important the fire for the pines to reseed an area.
From the Visitor’s center, we admire the most famous and most predictable of all Yellowstone geysers: the Old Faithful. It erupts every 90 minutes for about 5 minutes and attracts the highest number of tourists: We see mainly Chinese now.
Since it is getting cold, we decide to take a break and hot drinks at lobby of the historic Old Faithful Inn built in 1904. The interior is all made with tree logs, all the beams and the stairs, everything. Really unique. It has a pleasant decadent feel to it that invites to read, play cards, quiet conversations and admire the geyser as it erupts. It feels a bit like when we are in one of the hiking huts in Switzerland but BIGGER.
John is disappointed about the weather. His whole idea to come to the west was so we could enjoy the natural wonders of the park, riding horses, taking an overnight fishing trip, show us where he used to catch the biggest trout, see the waterfalls. But, with this cold, all is limited. We are still enjoying it!
It is good to have a nice campsite though so when you “go back home” you hook up to the power and have heating in the motorhome. Last night, we had to disconnect the water hose to prevent it from freezing. During the day, layering is the key to be warm so we are wearing 4-6 layers each. So, on the pictures, it is not that we are all fat but that we are carrying almost all our clothes with us. Not stylish.
