Bird watching at Cobar Effluent Treatment Plant? - Cobar, Australia

Cobar, Australia

It was a casual start today, with only a couple of hours drive to Cobar ahead of us.

The closer we got to Cobar, the more goats we saw. Why they don't use these pests for dog meat I don't know.

We checked into the best caravan park in town (okay, so it was the only one in town) and drove around town noting down the tyre places, spare part places, diesel places and any other building that may house a brake line nut, in preparation for tomorrow.

Having to kill an afternoon, Glen was forced to play tourist in town as we strolled the main drag and drove out to the Fort Bourke Lookout and Open Cut Gold Mine. It was a huge open cut. Next tourist stop, The Newey, a man made lake that the tourist guide suggested would be great for bird watchers. Glen decided that my Information Centre mud map was not as good as his GPS and we trekked down some narrow, damp back tracks and came to a dead end at the effluent treatment plant. Good one. We backtracked and followed my directions. He hates it when I say "I told you so".

The Newey proved excellent stalking grounds and I notched up 18 different birds.

Back at the caravan park we had tea, again cooked on the diesel cooktop, had a shower and watched telly. I think I prefer steaks and chops cooked on the Weber, the inside cooktop tends to stew them when I put the lid on the pan because I don't want grease spread all over the place. I will work it all out eventually.
