Check in was smooth. Our receptionist, Robert looked a little bit like Mr Obama, so we all agreed that if for some unforeseen circumstance our diaries do not allow us to meet the real deal, we shall have our photo taken with Robert instead. At quite a distance. Our rooms are located on different floors, which earned a sigh of relief from Mr Parsons, who was anxious that he would incur the wrath of the Nursery Mafia if he kept them awake with his snoring. We decided to battle against the ravages of jet lag and explore the District. We chanced upon a charming Italian restaurant and indulged in small talk whilst trying to avoid falling asleep in our pasta. We ate at about 8.30 but actually our weary brains were telling us that back home it was actually half past one, which added to the assault on our combined mental faculties. It's a wonder we managed to pay the bill between us. But we did manage a "second wind", which wasn't as rude as it sounds, particularly after eating platefuls of heavy carbs. Some of us, more adventurous types, stumbled upon quite a find: A bookshop that served as a coffee bar and grill. The atmosphere inside was great and gave us a real sense of the vibrancy of the neighbourhood. We agreed that such an establishment probably wouldn't work on St Mary Street on a busy Saturday night, but in Washington DC it was perfect!
