day 13 - Surabaya, Indonesia

Surabaya, Indonesia

we wake and shower and enjoy another delicious breakfast.
We then head off to Mirota again to buy a few more gifts that I had thought of for birthdays.
Then to Giant supermarket to get a few Rawon sachets to take home. This is the beef soup that we tried and liked, so typically Javanese. We also buy some Bumbu Bali sachets to take home, they are what Tini the maid cooked us for dinner last night, bumbu chicken and Tofu.
We then head to a pet shop to buy some kitty litter for the 3 babies and what should I see in their but a baby hedgehog. So very gorgeous, I hope he finds a forever home.
We then go to House of Sampoerna. Glenn and I don't smoke but thought this would be fascinating to see, they still to this day handroll every single cigarette and even make the boxes.
Everything is done by hand ending with putting the label on.
When I was a smoker, I did try these clove cigarettes. Very different.
We miss them rolling by 1 hour, on a Saturday they only work until 10am.
We look through this fascinating place and make a few purchases upstairs.
Glenn buys a T shirt with the old dutch spelling Soerabaia.
Stacey buys an artefact owl.
I admire some gorgeous puppets but they are very expensive and I think of my friend Gill and wish I could get them home for her. But would then have to post them to South Australia......all too hard and expensive. I will post the pic for you Gill.
We walk next door to the café and its gorgeous.
Lovely staff and great food and very reasonably priced.
Full, we head off to the shopping mall Galaxy.
We decide 3 hours is a good time to spend there and as it was quite expensive, we managed to see every shop of all floors (there are about 6) as we don't spend too long in any once we realise the prices.
I expect the wealthy Chinese in the posh houses shop here.
Stacey buys 2 tops and 2 belts.
I purchase some black blingy sketchers thongs.....and they were a bargain at 97 000rp ($9.50). I also wanted the blue and the pink but of course not in my size.
Glenn surprises us all by buying a golf club. Oh dear, its very light but in a huge box, I expect we will see it coming on the baggage carousel.
Apparently the original price was $650 and he got it for $120.
So even in expensive shopping centres, I can sniff out a bargain.
Hungry and 6pm, we head to dinner to a Padang place.
In bali we always walk past the little stalls with glass fronts and plates turned upside down with food on and flies.......but have always wanted to try it. Just been to scared of getting sick.
So with the guidance of Local friends, we go t a reputable more upmarket place and have it for dinner.
Another thing ticked off the bucket list.
It's very nice but all quite spicy.
Arrive home to the babies and we pack, as in arranging what to put in cabin bags etc. I always utilise these for clothes in case the luggage goes missing. I sure as heck wouldn't get Asian clothes to fit me or knickers for that matter !!
The spa in bali gave me paper ones and after my finger went through them, then my big toe and then I think I heard the elastic snap, they went into the bin :)
Dee makes gorgeous jewellery, has a real eye for colour and talent, so I buy 2 pieces off her that I had her custom make to go with my new dresses from Soul sisters in Bali.
The boys are now shooting some pool and having a beer, us girls are doing bits and pieces (yes on the net) and tomorrow will be here all too quick.
I hear the little man walking up our street with his little cart banging it.......they bang a different noise for different things they are selling.
I wish they did that at home.
We are going to a very old hotel for dim sum brunch and then to the airport around 1.30 for a 4.30 International flight to Penang.
Whilst we are sad to be leaving what has been a wonderful week, we are also excited to start the final leg of our journey, a week in Penang.
(having trouble loading photos, will add more tomorrow)
