Maybe think about somewhere like Amersham, in the Chiltern Hills, which is reachable by 'tube' from central London (though it doesn't run underground all the way out there!). It's an appealing little town, with some fine half-timbered buildings, some lovely old pubs, and a tea room or two. There are also decent walks from the town which will take you into the unspoilt Chilterns, with fine views and gorgeous beech woods.

Daytrips will be to:

Windsor Castle
Diggerland
