What is Periactin?
This medicine is a type of antihistamine used to treat or prevent various allergy symptoms such as hay fever, nasal inflammation, and runny nose, but it also acts as an appetite stimulant in adults and children. Many underweight people struggling to gain weight have experienced good results with this medication. It’s antiserotoninergic effects also make it suitable as an appetite stimulant.
Merck (the drug manufacturing company producing Periactin) claims it to be the first clinically proven appetite stimulant. Although a number of studies researching the benefits of appetite stimulants have recommended various medications including megestrol (Megace), dronabinol (Marinol), cyproheptadine (Periactin), and thalidomide (Thalomid), which have all shown to be effective appetite stimulants.
Periactin appetite stimulant is not a controlled drug in anyway as it's only really an anti-histamine. Your doctor can supply you with a prescription or you can get it online.
What are the effects of taking Periactin?
Ok, now about the effects of taking periactin for weight gain. You will be able to sleep at least 10 hours, if not more. The hunger you feel with periactin is very acute the increase in appetite is very noticeable.
Keep in mind that you will not notice the beneficial effects from taking the periactin immediately, but after a few days of repeated use you will begin to experience the increased appetite.
Who should take Periactin?
Periactin is prescribed to patients of all ages. However, I think it would be of great use to younger athletes and other people who are trying to gain weight but don’t have the commitment of working a full time job. Let’s say if you wanted to put on 20 pounds steroid-free, taking periactin seems like an efficient way to gain weight at a rapid rate, since the hunger and the sleep would produce solid weight gain, and this working schedule could accommodate for the increased hours of sleep. You shouldn’t expect pure muscle growth, but you will find your body putting on weight within a relatively short period of time.
Periactin side effects
If you are considering taking periactin, then you should be aware of any adverse side effects. Fatigue and sedation may be associated with Periactin. Many users report the effects of prolonged and deeper sleep. This isn't necessarily a bad thing when trying to gain muscle. You should review all the potential adverse effects of this medication with your doctor.
How should I take Periactin (cyproheptadine)?
Take this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If the goal is to gain weight then taking 4mg doses on a daily basis will work. Make sure not to take larger doses than recommended and follow the directions on your prescription label.

it really works. disadvantages are that it will make u sleep alot. weight gain is a must, but some people get it in the wrong places. and planning on having a date? forget about it. u will be totally useless. so if u wanna sleep, eat and gain weight, periactin works.

I took this med 40 years ago- I’m 62. Used it for about 7-8 years. I was 5′ 5″ and 105 pounds when I started- that was after having 2 babies. I did have a good appetite, but for all the food I did eat, I just could’nt gain weight. I was never sleepy from this med. The biggest complaint was that I spent so much time eating. I would describe it as being able to eat without ever reaching the point of feeling full. Every meal could be a Thanksgiving feast if you had the time. My afternoon “snack” at work was 6 danishes or pastries. Had a standing order with a deli to deliver them to my office at 3 pm. I spent huge amounts of money on eating.
Toward the end, it was my own aging – going into my 30′s that I cut the daily pill in half. About a year later, I wean myself c ompletely off of them. Now if I eat anything with carbs, I’ll be a pound heavier tomorrow. Enjoy the joys of eating while you can.

Anyway, I’m back with an update (been M.I.A. for a while)
I’ve been maintaining at 130-131 since a couple weeks past my last update
I LOVE it!!! I was buying it online because u can buy it online without a perscription -BUT- I Finally got a Doctor to write a perscription for me!!! Way cheaper!!! So, I don’t take them daily anymore maybe like 2x week or if I feel my appetite is slipping.

I’ve been taking periactin 4mg for 3 days now. I Take them 2 times a day. I am already noticing a big change in appetite but I feel like a zombie! It makes you feel like you’re pregnant! And as far as weight gained it has been a change. I started off at 103 pounds now I’m 106

Hello….just an update on this pill…it DOES work…..wonderful little pill…..does wonders………as everyone has noted it make up sleep…so if you lacking sleep you got a win here…..you definitely eat a lot….in two weeks…honestly my face was fulling up…….i want to gain some but now much…..so i cut my dosage to half a pill every two to three days. It makes you crave stuff..it make you eat the things you before would never try….lol…all in all it is not a bad thing….just enjoy eating…..guess anyone can just have their doctor precribe it for them……or you can get from your pharmacy without a precription.

I’ve been taking periactin for 5 days and I love it !!! My whole life I eat and eat and never gain weight.. I’m 16, 5’4 and weigh about 99-100 pounds. After taking periactin I am now 104 pounds. I was 99 to100 pounds and I gain and loose weight by week I try to keep my weight but it won’t stay the biggest I ever got was up to 135 which was my goal I would keep that weight for a good 3mo but then start dropping I am at 109 how can i get this periactin and how much it cost I have no insurance so I have to pay.

Be glad your Dr. is doing tests to get at the root of the problem. Not gaining weight could be a symptom of something else…So, everything should be ruled out. Nonetheless, I hope this will work for my kid.
This stuff is AMAZING!!! I only wish that I found out about it 10 years ago. The dizziness lasted only a week, the sleep increased(which is great) and I gained 11 pounds in a month. I couldnt believe my eyes. My ribs werent as pronounced and my hip bones didnt stick out anymore. I never ate so much in my life, I even ate mushrooms and crab salad lol. The only problem was when I stopped taking them, my weight dropped back down within a month and a half. I’m starting again but this time every other month until I reach my goal weight. All my friends are trying to lose weight and I’m popping pills to gain it. Life is strange, aint it?
P.S. Your stomach will be bloated but don’t be scared it goes back down once you start your break from periactin. P.S.S. the pills stop working after a month because your body gets used to them…hence the break. Good luck eyeryone!
Starting this on my 7 year old son who has severe food aversions. He has a limited amount of things he will eat. Have gone through testing to rule out any physical issues. 100% normal. The GI is prescribing until the referral goes through for some intensive feeding therapy. He would go almost all day without eating. Hoping this will make him hungry enough to eat and try knew things.

i use to take these pills and they do make you sleep.. i was losing weight because i was depressed , and just wasnt eating.. my doctor called them in ..told him my situaton.. i started again and oh boy let me tell you they do work.. all of my pants were not fitting like they to use fit.. they are snug on me but im not md just have to get a bigger size.. when i lost weight i was weighing 122lbs now im 140 i weight myself daily ..im so happy now people look at me and say girl you look so good.. i have always had hips and but. my husband loves it..so they do work but i eat up every dam thing..
