Located in the state of Karnataka, Mysore Palace is the central attraction of the ‘City of Palaces’, Mysore. The city, when it was a princely kingdom, was ruled by the Wodeyar dynasty from this palace. With the first palace built in the 14th century and the modern palace around 1912, the history of Mysore Palace spans over more than 500 years. The Wodeyars were patrons of art and culture and this interest of theirs manifests itself in the palace. This majestic structure, designed by Henry Irwin, is an example of splendid architecture and fine taste.



The Mysore Palace consists of three storeys and a 145-foot five storeyed tower built in Indo-Saracenic style. The stone building is made of grey granite with beautiful pink marble domes laid in an interesting symmetry. Its façade consists of 7 focal arches and two smaller arches winging the central arch which is supported with tall pillars. The sculpture of Gajalakshmi, the goddess of wealth, above the central arch adds to its magnificence. The palace architecture is a unique blend of Rajput, Islamic and Gothic architectural styles.



Open for tour on all days of the week, the interiors of the Mysore Palace are breathtakingly beautiful. The Doll’s Pavilion displays traditional dolls and antique objects from around the world in gold, silver, ivory and marble. At the centre of the palace lies a colossal court which leads to the royal marriage hall. This Kalyana Mantapa is domed by the five storeyed tall tower. The corridors of the palace are adorned with stunning paintings depicting images of the times gone by. The walls, ceilings, and domes decorated with intricate patterns bear testimony to the excellent craftsmanship of the Wodeyar era.

Dussehra, the Hindu festival celebrating the triumph of goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura, is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Mysore. Mysore Palace is a part of this fervour with a grand programme held in the palace grounds every Dussehra. It is attended by leading artists from all over the country and outside. The entire palace is illuminated in the months of September and October with a total of 96,000 lights marking the occasion. Illumined with sparkling golden lights, the palace is a spectacular sight.
