The Chebabs of Yarmouk is a documentary, directed by Axel Salvatori-Sinz

Alaa Hassan, Samer, Tasneem and Wead, third generation Palestinian refugees living in the Syrian camp of Yarmouk, are the Chebabs. With an accomplice observant camera, Aexl Salvatori-Sinz films these young people beset by doubt with regards to their choice of future life, stretched between the friendly loyalty and desire to take flight times away from others.

This month FreeYourMind takes a look at service provision and dedicates it to one public service institute: NaTIS. The show NotUs (NaTis), aims at service provision and its one road test that will put a smile on the clients (the audience). The show consists of an instructor (Mc) and four comedians (learners) that navigate around the obstacles (audience) and at the end of the night the audience will get to choose who goes away with the License to tell jokes in public.

Provocature, a collection of nude photographs by visualist JuliArt Hango is exhibited at JoJo’s in the Old Brewery Complex in Windhoek

JuliArt is described as one of the more controversial photographers in Namibia. She has always had an interest in sensuality and was curious to learn how the average human mind works when aroused or any implied possibility thereof. She began taking photos of her partner as a hobby and went on to shoot over 40 different Namibian people and is now known for her Siknature Photography brand.

The Woermannhaus Art Gallery honours one of Namibia’s great artists, Christine Marais, with a retrospective exhibition of her work.

Marais lived in Namibia from the age of 35 until her death at 77 in 2012. During this time she contributed enormously through her art and illustrations to public appreciation and understanding of the natural history of Namibia. Her carefully painted, evocative works depicting the fauna and flora, as well as the geomorphology and fossil history of this fascinating country continue to educate and delight Namibians. The books she illustrated in collaboration with local scientists and other experts are works of art, as well as essential records of the diversity and beauty of Namibia.

The works included in the Christine Marais Retrospective Exhibition are drawn from personal collections of her work belonging to her family and friends, and are representative of many years of this artist’s prolific creative career.

AfricAvenir Windhoek in partnership with Onland Productions, present the Namibian Premiere of the Angolan-Brazilian film Jogo de Corpo. Filmmaker Richard Pakleppa and his Brazilian film crew will attend the screening and be available for a Q-and-A after the screening.

In the film a descendent of African slaves, Capoeira Mestre Cobra Mansa, looks in Africa for what he does not have in Brazil. The movie tells the story of combat games, dances and music that connect Brazil and Africa from the time of slavery to the present.

Their kids have made something of themselves: Marko may be embarking on a career as a writer while his brother Jakob runs a local dental clinic. Everything seems orderly and safe – until Gitte, who has been suffering from depression for many years, claims she has recovered and has stopped taking her medication. The other family members see this as a threat to their interests, the façade of the apparently happy family crumbles, and Grandma disappears.

The OYO dance troupe, famous for having represented Namibia (and Africa) at the Commonwealth Youth Dance Festival in Glasgow in July 2014, is proud to premiere its new show In and Out.

The show comprises of three pieces of 15 minutes each – ‘Magda’, on corrective rape, ‘No More Parties’, a creation looking at how nurses treat gays at health centres, and ‘In and Out’, a creation following the journey of a young inmate. At times funny, at times tragic, the pieces all have in common the celebration of love and our differences, calling for tolerance.

In this very personal, fascinating investigation, South African documentary maker Vincent Moloi journeys from the Soweto sitting rooms of veterans to El Alamien to find the answers and in doing so unearths the significant contribution of South Africa’s black soldiers to the Allies’ North Africa campaign.

Amongst the winning projects was the Dordabis Community Spine, a social intervention by young Windhoek-based architects in the village of Dordabis.

Savannah Afros is a 6 piece band comprising of songwriters, performing artists and social activists that was founded in Harare, Zimbabwe by Tapuwanashe Munyayi. Their interest in music began at an early age where singing and dancing was part of their upbringing. Most of the group are self-taught mbira, marimba, djembe and African drum players, who sing in Shona, English, Tonga and Ndebele.

Savannah Afros address social issues in their music and use the arts to create awareness and enhance social engagement with their audience.

Drama student Fine Lorenz dreams of a stage career. Given that she’s a wallflower, she would not have stood a chance had Kaspar Friedmann not taken notice of her. Perhaps this is exactly what the prominent director liked about her: Fine is a blank slate, malleable and willing to change her identity for a big role, and thus sacrifice her own personality. Under the director’s pressure, the willing Fine is to identify with her character, but her self-abandonment brings her close to the brink of disaster.

The Two Of Us is directed by Ernest Nkosi

In this well-crafted first-feature film, director Ernest Nkosi tells the story of the turbulent relationship between a young man named Thulas and his sister Zanele, who live in the township of Alexandra in South Africa. After witnessing the abuse of his sister as a child, Thulas vows to protect her at any cost. When Zanele falls for an older man, he is determined to put an end to their relationship.
